Funds needed for youth's operation

From Page 1 been trying to save Manolito, who travels everywhere by bus, is as likely to be officiating a girls' softball game at one of the local colleges, as he is putting up posters for Ballet Concert, a Coral Gables based Cuban ballet company. While working as an umpire, Manolito had been trying to save money for an operation that could improve control of his movements at least 20 per cent, and possibly as much as 80 per cent. When Wayne Blanton, Boys' Club director, found out about the possibility of such an operation, he researched it and found that a special pacemaker could be installed in Manolito's brain that would improve his condition. The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, headed by Leslie Pantin Jr., agreed to take charge of raising the entire amount needed for the operation. The Kiwanis of Little Havana, contributed $1,000 to get the fund started. In addition, Anthony Infante, president of the Southeast Bank of Coral Way, pledged to cover 50 per cent of the entire cost of the operation. Members of the Coral Gables, and Perrine Kiwanis have all made generous contributions to the fund, according to Pantin. "This is a big project because through a community effort we will be helping a human being who has struggled to help himself," said Pantin. "It is also a significant project because Cubans and Anglos have joined together to solve Manolito's problem," he added. The pacemaker alone costs about $2,000 and the operation and hospital bill will run to about $5,000, said Pantin. And that cost does not include post-operative treatment and rehabilitation expenses. "We are so proud of the young people who have helped Manolito," said Mrs. Matthews. "It is almost like an act of God that this has happened. We have been trying to improve his condition since 1956 and just two years ago they came out with this new operation." "I have many good friends," Manolito said. "My friends are like brothers to me and I don't know what I would do without them," he said. Anyone wishing to contribute to Manolito's operation can send it directly to: Manolito Lopez Trust Account, Southeast Bank of Coral Way, 1699 Coral Way, Miami, Fla. 33145.
