Head Start still has openings

Pre-schoolers with health disabilities, such as hearing, sight, speech impairment, developmental delays, emotional and physical handicaps can enroll in the Head Start program which begins Aug. 30. "We have federal funding to serve 250 children with special needs," said Sue Feazel, assistant to the Head Start director. "So far we only have 108 children enrolled in the program, which means we have many openings," Mrs. Feazel said. Special facilities will be made available for children in wheelchairs as part of this year's concentrated program. A total of 30 Head Start centers and classroom sites — including three in the Southwest and South Dade area — will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The four private Head Start facilities in the south are open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The South Dade public schools which will have the program this fall are South Miami Elementary School, 5275 Sunset Dr., Tucker Elementary School, 3500 Douglas Rd., Dade Elementary School, 3501 SW 28th St. The private facilities include the Perrine Center at 17801 Homestead Ave., Matthews Center, 17500 SW 103rd St., Goulds Mobiles, 21850 SW 114th Ave., John F. Kennedy, 13800 SW 264th St. To register preschoolers, parents can contact any one of the following Community Action Agency's Service Centers in South Dade: South Miami Center, 6780 SW 59th Pl., 667-5581; Perrine Center, 17801 Homestead Ave., 238-5771; and Goulds, 11590 SW 220th St., 233-2121. Head Start provides free child development services including a comprehensive education program, primary health car, daily nutritional needs, social services and parent involvement. The Head Start Centers in public schools and in private facilities, also serve three and four-year-olds without special needs.
