Cornices accent bedroom windows
From Page 15 and topped with a circular piece of clear glass. Also throughout the room are sculptures made by Haitians who use the root of the lignum vitae tree to make wood carvings. Each one is different since no two pieces of root are alike. Steubins made different cornices for the windows in several of the bedrooms in the house. In Mindy's room, which is decorated with two twin beds covered with a flowered print in tones of red, pink and yellow, the antique yellow cornices surround the windows. Instead of curtains, the windows are decorated with shades, covered with the same material as the bedspreads. Steubins made a stencil of Liza's headboard and then made a window cornice to match. The same hand painted figurines that decorate the headboard have been carefully and lovingly drawn on the cornice. David, an aspiring writer, needed a big desk in his bedroom, so his dad again came to the rescue. Taking up an entire wall of the room, Steubins made a desk topped with green formica. Using scraps of the same formica, he made a light fixture which can be turned on and off by a switch conveniently situated on the side of the desk. The master bedroom's cornice is done in the same Mediterranean style as the king-size headboard and is covered with the same material that makes up the bright and colorful bedspread. Still another project for the handyman of the Steubin household was covering the dining room and hallway floor with decorative tiles. Although most of the floor is done with white tiles, a design around the dining room table was created by using patterned, gold-toned ornamental tiles.
