Coke on a hot tar roof is theme of commercial
By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer You've probably never seen four grown men enjoy a soft drink so much, but then, they were getting paid pretty well to do so. To film a Coca Cola commercial on the roof of the Phillis Kapp Studio of the Dance in Coral Gables, the actors downed huge mouthfuls of pizza and incredible gulps of coke. "Take a bite, Frank!" the director would yell, "Down it Miles, down it!" And Miles would down half a bottle and look like he loved it. For hours. It was just one segment in a commercial about two pizza delivery boys, whose misadventures somehow help them meet a girl. It doesn't really make sense, but it doesn't have to, just so it sells Coke. On the roof of the dance studio were two sweating workmen laying out tar paper. They ordered a pizza and invited the delivery boys to stay for a bite, all to the tune of "Coke adds life." For hours. On Tuesday, another segment was filmed inside the dance studio, when the gangly pizza boys somehow got tangled up in a dance number among graceful ballerinas. How did Coca Cola pick Ms. Kapp's studio? "Because I'm famous, "she laughs, "there's just no other place like this. You should have seen it Tuesday, the inside looked like a movie studio!" The film crew had been shooting in Greater Miami for a week, finishing up in Coral Gables on Thursday. Photo by KAY SEVERINSEN

Former police chief, woman may run for city commission
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer If the race for the mayorship in Coral Gables promises to be an exciting one, the commission race will certainly be colorful. Although the qualifying date for candidates in the Gables isn't until Feb. 7, there is plenty of speculation and talk about the possible candidates that will run for a slot on the city commission. Incumbent Bill Chapman, who was appointed to his second term as commissioner when Commissioner Rebyl Zain died in 1973, and elected to a two-year term in 1975, will be seeking office again this spring. Rumor has it that former Coral Gables Police Chief William G. Kimbrough will also seek office in April. Kimbrough, who retired as the head of the city's law enforcement agency after 31 years of service, has not yet announced his candidacy, but he isn't denying it either. In a surprise move at a special Biltmore meeting Tuesday afternoon, W.L. Philbrick, former Coral Gables commissioner, announced his plans to run for mayor of the city. He added his son, Jack E. Philbrick, would seek a seat on the commission. Young Philbrick served on the commission in 1970 when he was appointed to complete the remaining one-year term vacated by his father because of ill health. Several women leaders in the community are anxious to see a woman on the city commission. Marian Krutulis, principal of Gulliver Academy, is among those rumored to run for office. It is not unusual in a city like Coral Gables for the watchdogs, who appear before the commission time and time again, to cross over to the other side and seek a seat on the governing body. Perhaps this year the residents of the Gables will see George A. F. Schulte, a business con- See GABLES, Page 12 William Chapman Marian Krutulis William Kimbrough Jack E. Philbrick
