the story of an old fire engine From West Miami to Cali, Colombia
By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer If there were a graveyard for fire engines, the 24-year-old fire engine used by City of West Miami would have gone there long ago. But West Miami's old fire engine isn't going to be retired. It's going to Cali, Colombia, to be used by that South American city's fire department. "And I just hope they don't have too many fires in Cali," said West Miami Mayor Edmund Cooper, "because I don't know whether that old fire engine would be of much help." In its place, the City of West Miami is going to get two later-model fire engines which belong to the City of Miami. And at no cost to the City of West Miami. Confused? If you aren't, officials in the City of Miami may be after a six-month bargaining session with one of West Miami's more persistent councilmen James Ray. "It was Councilman Ray who did the whole thing," explained Mayor Cooper. "And he probably saved the city a lot of money, because West Miami would have had to get another fire engine from somewhere." The City of Miami has traditionally given its used fire engines to its sister cities, one of which is Cali, Colombia. "So when I heard that Miami had two used fire engines which it was considering sending down to Cali," said Councilman Ray, "I called up Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre to see if the City of West Miami couldn't get those fire engines in return for West Miami's fire engine, which Miami could send to Cali." After swap talks over a six-months period, the deal was made. The only reservation made by the City of Miami is that Miami would have the use of one of its former fire engines if it needed it in the event of a big fire in the western part of Miami. "We'll be glad to let Miami use one of the fire engines if they need it," Councilman Ray conceded. "Miami looks upon the swap as a way of loaning out one of its fire engines until it's needed, which we hope will be never." The City of West Miami's two new fire engines are a 1957 model and a 1961 model, both of which have been "exceptionally well maintained," according to Mayor Cooper. Bob Puzon (l.), shift commander and Pablo Gonzalez, fire rescue, will soon be saying goodbye to the faithful engine. Photo by DOROTHY STEIN
