Those cypress tables needn't put a dent in your pocket For as little as $50, you can finish your own table

By MARGIE KENIN Correspondent "My wife always want-ed one and I like to do things like this. To me it's an adventure," said Bob Evans of Kendale Lakes, as he prepared to put a large piece of cypress in his van. Evans is about to start making his own coffee table, one of those irregu-larly shaped, endlessly fascinating pieces, crafted by Mother Nature and en-cased in impervious resin by man. "I like the idea of no two being alike. When I'm finished it will be one of a kind," he said. Evans selected his wood from Artists Gardens, 6920 Bird Rd., and he re-ceived detailed instruc-tions from Tony Scribner, an employe at the store. "If someone is hesitant, I suggest that they start with a small piece like a plaque," says Scribner. "But I know anyone can do it." Scribner compared the wood to a gem that has been polished. The resin brings out all the color put there by nature. Unfinished plaque-sized pieces sell for as little as $4 and can be hung on a wall, mounted with a photograph or used as a base for decoupage. A small table can be fin-ished for about $50 and a large one for $200, with a variety of prices in be-tween. These tables sell for approximately twice as much at craft shows and even more at furni-ture shops, according to Scribner. In three hours working time, spaced within a three day period, you can do the three steps neces-sary to finish the table. First you sand the raw wood with a belt sander. If you don't own one, Scribner will do it for you. "My charge will be about the same as renting a sander and buying sand-paper," he said. Allow about one half hour for this task depending on the size of the piece. Next, the sanding dust must be vacuumed and a sealer coat applied. "We like to use Steel-Flex resin as it is special-ly modified. Urethane re-sins aren't as durable," Scribner said. The resin comes in two parts and is mixed in a ratio of two parts to one. "I like to mix in a paper cup or tin," says Scribner "I like materials that are expendable." The sealer coat is brushed on and al-lowed to dry for 24 hours. Then a batch of resin is mixed again, about twice the amount as before. It is poured on and spread with the edge of a card-board. "Like icing a cake," explained Scrib-ner. "Air bubbles can be picked up easily with paper or cardboard or popped by gently breath-ing on them," Scribner continued.
