Praying together Sharing similarities urged on Interfaith Day

By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer Can Protestants, Catholics and Jews all pray together at once? On Interfaith Day they did, combining the efforts of the Church Women United and the Jewish women of Dade County. "A woman from each faith read from her own Scriptures, then we all prayed together," says Polly Cook, director of the Wesley Foundation which moderated the event Thursday. "We are all brothers and sisters and we all have the same God." Church Women United, a national organization, was not always so open minded, remembers long-time member Charlotte Biedron. "We weren't interracial until the 50s. Now we have all races," she says. And it used to include only Protestant women, now on Interfaith Day, all Judeo-Christian women come together." When Interfaith Day was first celebrated 11 years ago, women were just beginning to explore other religions, Mrs. Biedron says. "We wanted to experience other faiths and learn more about them. "I remember visiting a synagogue on Miami Beach that was just beautiful. The rabbi showed us the Torah and explained its sacredness and symbolism. At that time very few Protestants had ever gone into a synagogue. We were so polarized then. "Now we are moving into a dimension of finding common things that we share. We knew we shared things back then, but we didn't experience them," she added. That's why Interfaith Day is such a wonderful thing, she and Ms. Cook believe. It gives women of very different faiths a chance to share what they have in common. Church Women United began at the turn of the century, when overseas missionary efforts were gaining popularity.
