Paring Knife, Rolling Pin, Clay Launch Beginner on Modeling Career

By ALLAN J. KEPLINGER Pottery-craft and ceramics are no longer expensive as a hobby, requiring a knowledge of chemistry, physics and science, according to Art Education Instructor Adaline S. Donahoo of the School of Education, University of Miami. "Thousands of people today are enjoying the art of making pottery, the study of ceramics, modeling processes, execution of original designs, firing and glazing, and combining a hobby with a profitable business," she said. The University course employs two methods of procedure: the slab method and the coil system. Beginners find the coil system more successful because of its simplicity. It is used for cylinder objects such as vases, bowls, or vessels. The slab method is used mainly for building angular pottery. A templet of the actual object is first made and a base pattern cut from cardboard. Moist clay is kneaded until all air bubbles are removed. The pattern-cut from rolled clay becomes a reality and is ready for the kiln. Allowing for shrinkage due to water evaporation, ten per cent overage is added to the objects. Next comes the first firing in a kiln heated electrically to approximately 1900 degrees. There are two stages of firing: the first converts the clay object into a hard mass by expelling the moisture by heat and fusing the clay. Second firing develops the glaze. GLAZE APPLIED Ceramic glaze is actually glass of chemical compositoin causing it to adhere to a clay background. Glaze comes in powder form and is mixed with water before application. Four methods may be used: brushing, dipping, pouring or spraying. Beginning students find interesting phenomena such as gray powder coming out blue, and pink powder coming out yellow. Clay objects in the kiln for second firing must be cooled 12 hours before removing. Comparing pottery-craft to art, it has line, color, and form, and is a popular art medium for children in the public schools. Clay is an untrained mass that is converted into form through the creative value of the emotions and expression of the individual. Students make figurines, vases, bowls, enamelry sets, ashtrays, floral center pieces, and candle-holders. Many of these are quite expensive when purchased in the downtown shops. CERAMIC EWELRY One of the latest fads is the ceramic costume jewelry. Ear rings, dress ornaments, and bracelets are the most popular. So many designs and color combinations tend to spur the imagination into an endless list of possibilities. No form of art is more satisfying than modeling clay. Mrs. Lillian Frost, daughter-in-law of the poet Robert Frost, now supervises a Vermont gift shop from her kiln in Miami. As a former student in ceramics at University of Maimi she liked pottery-craft so well that it became for her a well-paying hobby. With a paring knife, a rolling pin, a modeling tool, some clay, and a small paint brush the beginner starts to work. From kindergarten to adult the opportunity to create as an outlet of the individual's expression and ideas become sheer pleasure. Beach scenes, country scenes, the circus, the train, history of the world,—all form a more lasting impression in the elementary stages than the textbooks. And so it is with the humanities in conflicting emotional nature—and pottery-craft becomes a link between coordination of mind and working with the hands in creating and growing for the never-ending continuity of education.

Kiwanis Club Talk Stresses Conservation

The importance of a workable wildlife conservation program was emphasized at the meeting of the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club on Tuesday through a program conducted by three of its members. Speaking at the luncheon meeting at the Country Club of Coral Gables, A. W. Ellis, Dr. Herbert E. Sperry and Dr. R. M. Sheetz outlined the value of hunting and fishing to the state and criticised the state legislature for not facing the program squarely and passing "sane" legislation. New Project It was also announced that the Kiwanis Club will sponsor the placing of 200 chewing gum vending machines throughout the Gables, the proceeds from which will go to the club's underprivileged child fund. Next Tuesday the club will stage a father and child meeting, with the program presented by the children of Kiwanians. Thomas C. Mayes, James Hoffmann and L. E. Westerdahl are in charge of the program.
