CORAL GABLES Country Club

By JENI PHILLIPS Frank Howard, newly appointed chairman of our Tournaments Committee, is anxious to get his job under way, and he will be asking for several good members to serve on the committee very soon. Representatives of golf, tennis, theatre, swimming, and boating groups will be asked to contribute their ideas for sporting activities within the Club. Rehearsals Started Rehearsals for "Ladies of the Jury," comedy drama by Fred Ballard, are in full swing, with an all-star cast emoting. Mrs. "Betty" Arnold, Dolores Wright, "Boots" Royall, Jane Gobat, Betty Bliss, Jean and Howard Hansen, Dr. Don Leigh, Bill Hartnett, Dr. Robert McCoy, Gene Ellenson, Gwen Tuckerman, Jackie May, Henry Binns, Dick Kenny, Gordon N. Taylor, Eleanor Healy, Karl Schmitz, E. E. Pennock, and Mr. Nichols have been cast. Other committees are being appointed to handle various technical details of the production. Performances are scheduled for July 1st and July 3rd. This selection of the theatre group is a successful comedy farce which ran for well over a year on Broadway, and which is still popular with Little Theatre groups. Something Special For Sunday night, we have something "extra special" for our dinner patrons. Don't miss the menu special featuring Breast of Philadelphia Capon Supreme en Casserole, prepared as only our chef can. He has concocted a sensational sauce designed to please the most discriminating gourmet. On Wednesday night in place of our regular buffet, there will be Club steaks as the main attraction. Serving hours will be from seven to nine p.m., as usual. Bridge Winners Winners for duplicate bridge during the week of May 26 were Mrs. Leo Brown, Mrs. Juliette Chapman, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Tawes. Tennis News In the Club Tennis Tournament that has been going on on our courts Gerald Montsalvatge emerged the winner in the boys' singles when he defeated Tom Blakley 6-2, 9-7, 6-1 in the finals. Gerald had previously defeated Billy Larson, 6-1, 6-0 and Doug Sandberg 6-1, 6-0 to earn a place in the finals. Blakley topped Bobby Macy, 6-0, 6-1 and Billy Merriam 6-3, 7-5 to become a finalist. Merriam was credited with wins over Billy Gray 6-0, 6-2 and Bing Seibold, 6-3, 6-0. In the boys' doubles competition Blakley and Merriam emerged victors over Montsalvatge and Sandberg 9-7, 8-6 in two hotly contested matches. In the men's quarter finals, Frank Froehling defeated Ted Slack, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Jack Waters topped Frank Esslingier, 6-1, 6-4. Golf Events The Junior Golf Championship Tournament of the Greater Miami Area, held at the Granada Course, was won by Bob Kennedy, 18-year old Miami Beach High student, who defeated David Herrington 2 and 1 in the finals. The trophy flight was won by Doug Phillips, son of Mayor Phillips of Coral Gables, and the third by Dickie Hardeman of Coral Gables. Prizes were donated by the Miami Daily News, Charlie Miller and Hawley Russell of Coral Gables, and by the Greater Miami Women's Golf Association. The regular trophy tournament in which the women members of the Coral Gables Country Club are competing is now in progress. The medalist is Rosamond Jordon, with a low score of 95. The low putt was won by Mrs. Julia Green. Mrs. Ann Randolph, chairman of the golf committee, upset the medalist by defeating her one up 19 holes. Fashion Show Summer styles will be the motif for the fashion show scheduled to be presented at noon on Saturday, June 14. The Florida Power and Light Company executive has been a worker in the Chest movement since its inception and succeeds Frank J. Kelly. Probably most important in the program outlined by the Gables man for the Chest was consideration of methods to prevent multiplicity of fund raising campaigns through a sanctions committee and backed by municipal ordinances. The first meeting of the new board of directors will be held on Friday, June 13.
