Coral Gables Elementary School Graduates Large Class Wednesday, Exercises Followed By Formal At Woman's Club
One of the largest classes in the history of the Coral Gables Elementary School received certificates of graduation from the eighth grade in ceremonies Wednesday morning at the school. For the 161 boys and girls it marked the close of the first phase of their formal education and entrance into high school. Many of the pupils have been together since kindergarten days. Following the program in the morning a formal party was held in the evening at the Coral Gables Woman's Club. Virginia Woolley, member of the 8-A,4 class gave the Farewell at the closing exercises which was preceded by the class march into the auditorium, flag salute, bible reading and prayer. James A. Henderson, member of the school board, gave the class address. Billy Gray, member of the 8-A,4 class was awarded the speech medal. Mrs. Bertha Webb, principle of the school presented the diplomas and the exercises ended with the song "Land of Hope and Glory" sung by the glee club. Receiving diplomas were the following boys and girls in class 8-A,1: Maddison Alderson, David Armitage, Revis Butler, Don Cantner, Leonard Denson, Nelson Dussault, Charles Gausee, Richard Glover, Fred Howland, James Kilbride, Wayne Moore, Bill Parker, Bill Rachow, John Remman, Joseph Robinson, Richard Ronca, Mitchell Sams, Edwin Smith; Marlene Byers, Betti Bilyeu, Veronice Carlson, Lucile Fossum, Jessie Foster, Shirley Gaskin, Earline Harden, Julie Harris, Kathryn Keeler, Helen Lowd, Demar Maerkl, Joyce Matheus, Lois Minnich, Elizabeth Otto, Reta Pittman, Nancy Lee Pomeroy, Shirley Schultz, Joan Slama, Sue Steinbach, Alice Stuart, Barbara Summerfield, Patsy Sutherland, Louise Van DeVort. Pupils Present Two Recitals
The piano pupils of Miss Hortense Buys gave their recitals in two programs May 23 and 30 at the Coco Plum Woman's Club. Graduating Eighth Graders at the Exmoor School are CLAIRE WHITEHURST, left, KENNETH RAWELL and VIRGINIA ALTER, Clair's mother, Mrs. Charles Whitehurst entertained the trio at breakfast following the school closing May 29. Virginia will enter Ponce in the fall, Kenneth will take his high school work at Exmoor and Claire plans to enter a convent school in New York following a summer of travel with her mother. —Vincent Crudele photo
Three Gables Girls Chosen To Attend Girls' State; Legion Auxiliary Sponsors
Three high school girls, daughters of prominent Coral Gables families, have been selected to attend Girls' State, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliaries which convenes July 14th — 19th at Tallahassee. They are Jeanette Waters, 2701 Columbus Boulevard, student at Ponce de Leon High school, and sponsored by the Coral Gables American Legion Auxiliary unit 98; Betty Muriel George, 5730 S.W. 12th court, Coral Gables, also of Ponce sponsored by the Coral Gables Business and Professional Women's club, and Mary W. Stahl, 1002 Granada Boulevard student at St. Theresa's High school and sponsored by St. Theresa's. These girls all third year high school students, were selected on the basis of leadership courage, honesty, character, scholarship and co-operativeness with their fellow students.

John Clarke Knight and Ed Knight, sons of Lt. Comdr and Mrs. John D. Knight of 4345 S.W. 16th terrace, spent a week at the Florida Military Academy, their alma mater, St. Petersburg during commencement. John graduated in 1943 before enlisting in Naval Aviation, while Ed graduated with the class of 1945, serving later with the U.S. Marine Corps.
