CORAL GABLES Country Club

By GORDON TAYLOR When busy business men take time out to spend an hour or so in my office to discuss ways and means of bringing the pleasure of a new club sport to the membership as a whole, then you know the TOURNAMENTS and TROPHIES Committee is making rapid progress. Frank Kerdyke and Dr. Bob Dickey are going to work out the problems of sailing for a sustained yearly schedule, and Rees Marshall, Jr. is tackling for the largest fish during a given period of time, a chowder party de luxe, deep sea fishing trips for us native and adopted sons. (You'd be surprised at the number of people who have never been deep-sea fishing), and a yearly regatta that would be a show of shows. I've heard a number of members tell how they love to sail but lack friends of the sailing fraternity. They might be surprised to know that excellent sailing crafts can be bought far cheaper than old jalopies! Cards Mailed Chairman Frank Howard'd cards to the membership were mailed several days ago and the attached return card will ask you to please signify your interests in any of the following activities: Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Boating, Theatre, Bridge, Shuffleboard, Chess, Checkers, Horsemanship, Dancing, Music, Costume Parties, Photography, Art, Private Flying, Trapp-Shooting, Skeet Shooting. Each of those activities are going to be organized and will offer unlimited opportunities for members to make new friends and acquire new interests. Show Is Good Congratulations to Kay and Tom Duff for giving us such a swell dancing exhibition last Saturday night. They were good sports and good dancers. Tom has told friends that the Tango originated with the gauchos of Argentina who swung their legs wide in their native dancing because of their big, ungainly chaps. Babs Barclay tell me there are three beats to each foot in the jitterbug. I got up to two beats and floundered. Perhaps we can clear the floor some night and have one of those youngsters show us all how it should be done. Those glass jalousies certainly made the dancing cooler. Did you ever realize that our club parties are so popular because you are among people you like? Beauty Parade Gloria Robinson gave us some unbelievably beautiful modeling last Saturday. The young brunette beauty is member Carol Campbell, the heart-breaking blond is member Marjorie McAndrews, the tall gray haired paragon of charm is member Mrs. Reid Bronson and that tall dark personification of perfection is guest model Euvera Benway. The reason he haven't seen that gorgeous red-head, guest model Ann Francis, at our shows before is because she has been on a tour of the Eastern States. Glad to see you back, Ann. The shops who have taken advantage of showing our members the latest in fashions have made a big hit with our fashionable society leaders. Ballet Classes You senior and junior members are reminded again of Princess Nina Caraciola's first gathering of all those interested in the beginning of a summer ballet class at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 19th. It will be fun and very reasonable. The Riddle Inter-American College will sponsor a lecture to be given by Mr. Sasha Siemel, a big-game hunter who has just returned from the jungles of Brazil. This lecture is scheduled for June 26th at 8:45 p.m. at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Members of the Club and students and friends of the Riddle Inter-American College are cordially invited to attend. Club members being admitted free of charge. Mr. Siemel has lectured widely throughout the United States, including the American Museum of Natural History at Washington and Columbia University in New York City. He is well known in Hollywood and has been the central figure of two books, "Green Hell" and "Tiger Man." Mr. Siemel has become known as the Tiger Man having killed more than 200 tigers as a hunter and jungle guide. This will be and outstanding lecture and will certainly be of great interest to all because of the full-color photographs and "on the scene" story by Mr. Seimel, who has brought back 4500 feet of film which he will use to illustrate his lecture. Next Wednesday will be another Cold Buffet that has proven so popular with the members. Wins Trophy The last tournament of women golfers was in competition for the Martin Trophy which was won by Mrs. Fred Jones, who also won the Sterling Golf Bowl. Presentation of the honors was made by Gordon Taylor at a luncheon on the Terrace. There is no news of the golf group for the past week because they seem to have been just slightly rained out!! Over on the Tennis Courts the Men's Single finals are scheduled for Sunday, June 22nd, the contestants for the title being Frank Froehling and Jack Waters. The results of the Men's Singles Semi-Final Round were: Frank Froehling defeated Ben Boesch (6-1, 6-3) and Jack Waters defeated A. P. "Buz" Bismark (5-7, 6-1, 6-2). SIX STUDENTS RETURN SATURDAY FROM BOYS' STATE

Six Ponce de Leon students, representing Coral Gables at the annual Boys State at Tallahassee, returned Saturday to their homes after an exciting week filled with instructions on what makes a state "tick," as well as lots of entertainment. The boys are George Smith, Douglas Preston, Ted Slack, Fred Anibal, Jack Murphy and Tom Woods. Jack Gramley is local chairman of the boys' state committee for the American Legion.
