Veterans of Foreign Wars Ask Aid In Compiling Military Library Here

Editor, Riviera-Times: The Ray Renuart Post No. 5718 Veterans of Foreign Wars is sponsoring a project to develop a complete Military History Section in the Coral Gables Public Library. The Post believes that the large veteran population of the city, together with thousands of GI's at Miami University and Pratt General Hospital, such a section would be appreciated by them. Further, it believes that books of this type should be available to the future generations of the community in order that they may have a complete picture of our military efforts and accomplishments. We, the undersigned, were appointed members of the Public Library Committee by our Post. We feel our first mission is to obtain Unit Histories. After some correspondence we learned that the following books have been published by the units concerned and are now available. Doubtless there are others. ARMY The 8th (AAF) sees England. The 15th (AAF) over Italy. The 79th Infantry Division (1st World War). XVI Corps. 30th Infantry Regiment. 233rd Engineer Combat Battalion. 313th Infantry Regiment. 504th Parachute Infantry. 24th Infantry Division. 30th Division. 83rd Division. 96th Infantry Division. 101st Airborne Division, Epic of. 103rd Division (Report After Action). 104th Timberwolf Division. USS Bairoko. USS Savo Island. USS Miami. USS Cowpens. 22nd Marine Bombardment Group. 533rd Marine Night Fighter Squadron. It will be considered a favor if the Riviera-Times or any reader knows of other histories, to notify either the Librarian, Public Library or any of the committee. The committee, after studying a plan of operation, felt that the Coral Gables members who served with any unit which has published a history would purchase it as a gift to the library. It was also thought by the committee that families with members who gave their lives while in one of these units might like to present a book in memory of this person. Continuing our efforts in behalf of our ideal, we are working also for gifts of biographies of war leaders, campaigns of all wars, impressions of methods and procedure of campaigns, industrial development and control during war, the press during war, procedure and accomplishment of war crimes trials, formation and adoption of peace treaties and keeping the peace. Each book donated will show the name of the person making the gift and in the case of a memorial gift, the name of the giver and person honored. Books may be sent direct from the publisher to the library, delivered in person to the library, delivered to the Riviera-Times or given to either one of the undersigned. This effort is for the community and the name of the Veterans of Foreign Wars does not appear in any book donated or in the library. Any assistance the Coral Gables Riviera-Times and its readers can render will be greatly appreciated; the members of the committee can be reached at the following addresses: Morton J. Engel, Engel's Mens Shop, 2207 Ponce de Leon Blvd.; Dr. Bernard E. Smyers, the Gables Theatre Blgd., 2031⁄2 Alcazar; Harry W. Livergood, Huskamp Motors, 242 Alhambra Circle. MORTON J. ENGEL, Chairman.

Speed Gables on Tuesday Denmark Today

The age of speed will be aptly demonstrated today when Mrs. Christian Jensen, 1245 Avenue Algeria, steps from a trans-Atlantic plane at the airport in Copenhagen, Denmark. Tuesday, Mrs. Jensen was still in Coral Gables, Florida, U.S.A. She boarded an Eastern Airlines plane on Tuesday morning for New York. Yesterday she took off again, headed for the European continent in a swift transoceanic plane. Mrs. Jensen expects to remain in Denmark for 2 1/2 months, returning to New York by a Danish ship. On her return trip she will be accompanied by her sister, Miss Inger Schouih. Mrs. Jensen is the wife of Christian Jensen, realtor, of 320 Coral Way.

Gables Agent Reports on Ship Lines

Full-scale restoration of American President Lines' famous round-the-world passenger-cargo service was assured today according to Travel, Inc., local agent of the line, with announcement that the U.S. Maritime Commission had invited bids for the construction of five deluxe 119-knot passenger ships for use over the company's globe-circling route. The five new vessels will accommodate 189 passengers and replace five passenger-cargo liners taken over from American President Lines by the Navy at the outbreak of the war and not returned. Larger Capacity Larger in both passenger and freight capacity than the pre-war round-the-world ships, the V-2000s are needed to handle expanding post-war trade. Just prior to Pearl Harbor, American President Lines had taken delivery of seven new President liners for round-the-world service, rated by the Maritime Commission as one of the essential American flag routes. Went to War All seven "went to war," but five did not return. The two which came back-the "President Polk" and the "President Monroe"-already have returned to the global route after undergoing complete reconversion to peacetime standards. Commenting on the Maritime Commission's action today William P. Mason pointed out that the V-2000s, also referred to as P-2's, are not to be confused with the two big luxury liners-"President Cleveland" and "President Wilson" which are rapidly nearing completion at Bethlehem Shipyards on San Francisco Bay and will enter the Trans-Pacific service later this year.

Now Firemen Can Ignore Falling Walls

A converted Sherman tank with water nozzles instead of a cannon goes into action as a firefighting machine to defy blazing aircraft or exploding ammunition. Known as an "ammunition dump fire fighter," the remodeled land dreadnought is expected to revolutionize methods of controlling dangerous fires by permitting fire fighters to track right into the middle of the blaze with water foam, ignoring danger of falling walls.
