Post Office Service Is Protested

C. B. Tutan, president of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, was authorized by the organization's board of directors this week to protest to Hugh Emerson, Miami postmaster, against the quality of postal service being given Coral Gables currently. Directors attending the meeting claimed it is taking too long a time for mail delivery from time of depositing mail; that mail distribution is being confused; and that the Wednesday afternoon closing of the post office has resulted in the one pick-up box at the post office being jammed. One director said it had taken four days for him to receive a letter from Miami Shores. Another said it is necessary for him to sort his office mail when he picks it up at the post office because he receives mail addressed to other firms. The chamber previously had requested the postmaster to correct the condition of the pick-up box being jammed on Wednesday late afternoons. The postmaster said the post office would arrange for a 3 p.m. pick-up from the box to relieve the congestion, but it was revealed the situation was the same this past Wednesday.

C of C Members to Discuss Gables Traffic Regulations

THE MOST UNUSUAL ROMANCE a woman ever had is the experience of Gene Tierney with Rex Harrison in the delightful hilarity about a haunt, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," showing at the Grove Theatre Saturday at 9:30 p.m. and Sunday through Tuesday, July 12-15. Coral Gables traffic regulations and enforcement will be discussed at the next membership luncheon meeting of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce at noon, Thursday, July 17 at Ely Cafeteria. City Manager W. T. McIlwain, Public Safety Director William Kimbrough and Floyd P. Brasher, traffic supervisor of the police department, will be invited to attend the meeting. Among subjects to be discussed are enforcement of parking regulations; bicycle riders; right turns on red lights at certain intersections; intervals on all traffic signal lights, and marking of stop streets. At a meeting of the chamber's board of directors this week, Director James A. Henderson told the board of the growing problem of "souped-up" automobiles operated by high school youths. The chamber will seek the advice of the three city officials regarding regulations against such operation. Many student groups visit State Parks for nature study.

Newsreels Show Boxing Bouts at Youth Center

Miami movie houses are now showing Universal Newsreel pictures of pinweight boxing bouts taken at the Coral Gables Youth Center. The films are currently playing at the State, Town, and Surf theaters, and will be at the Grove Theater July 13-15. Miss Betty Ward, of the Youth Center, reports that the pictures will reach about 5,000,000 people all over the country and will bring a lot of added publicity to the Center. Featured in the bouts are Terry Kilcoyne, 3; Jimmy Rosasco, 4; Tommy Huggins, 6; Johnny Skagstad, 6; Johnny Brinson, 6; Dickie Cameron, 6. Some of the older boys helping out around the ring, and the crowded bleachers are also pictured.

The whitest "white elephant" the War Assets Administration has on its hands in Florida is a surplus Army radar tower described as "pretty much out in the woods" near Ocala. The tower is 218 feet high with a 40-foot concrete base and contains about 28 tons of steel.

Honesty

City Parkway Crew Finds Hammer It's not unusual to pick up the telephone and hear a complaint about some city department or other; but when a joyous voice lauds some city workers, it almost falls into the man bites dog category. Such was the case yesterday when Mrs. A. C. Graffenberger, 1449 Avenue Alegriano, phoned The Riviera-Times to laud the mowers of the parks and parkways department. Some time ago, Mr. Graffenberger lost a valuable hammer and had given up hope of finding it. On Tuesday the parkway crew came by with their mowing machines, trimming the grass at the sides of the street. The Graffenbergers were not at home, but when they did return, there was the prized hammer, leaning against the front gate. "Such honesty deserves a little praise," Mrs. Graffenberger commented.

Budget Passed Speedily by Commission

Speedy passage of the annual appropriation ordinance, based on the 1947-48 budget, was effected Tuesday morning by the city commission. In a 15-minute session, the commissioners adopted the ordinance retaining a tax rate of 21 mills, based on the budget which gained approval at public hearings held recently in city hall. The commission will hold a special meeting at the conclusion of equalization hearings Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to pass the tax levy ordinance.

Youth Center Show Draws 560 Calls

THE SHERIFF TROUBLE Joel McCrea is having here with Donald Crisp is nothing to the woman trouble he gets later on from Veronica Lake in "Ramrod," which is showing at the Parkway Theatre Friday through Sunday, July 11-13. Five hundred and sixty phone calls was the response to last Friday's Youth Center amateur contest broadcast over WBAY. The program was run on the style of Major Bowes' amateur hour, with the radio audience being requested to call in their vote for their favorite contestant. According to Miss Betty Ward, the purpose behind the show was to test audience reaction and she said she was delighted with the response. Winner of the contest with 154 calls, was Francis McCrink who sang, accompanying himself on the guitar. Second, with 125 calls, was Marilyn Brown, classical pianist. Third place with 104 calls, went to Hilda Hoyt, electric guitarist. Tonight will be quiz night again.. The program, produced by Betty Ward, will have, among others, Jacqueline May, Bruce Bohn, and Georgette Freeman. Also scheduled is the presentation of medals for the swimming and diving, physical fitness and J. C. boxing contest winners. Miss Ward said she would like to hold an amateur contest, similar to last week's, about every three weeks. On that program all the accumulated talent will be presented.

The O'Leno Recreation Area, a State Park, may be reached by U.S. Highway No. 1.

Slain Cabbie Former Gables Worker

Chris Theodorou, taxicab driver slain on the Fourth of July in Coconut Grove, was a former employee of the Coral Gables branch post office, The Riviera-Times learned today. Wilbur E. Sullivan, 20-year-old confessed killer of the cab driver, was bound over to the grand jury Wednesday without bond on charges of first degree murder, following a hearing before Peace Justice Henry L. Oppenborn, held in Gables City Hall.
