INTRODUCING THE SOROPTIMISTS | Mrs. Snow Pioneers In Gables; Opens First Woman's Dress Shop
Although the word pioneer reminds one of age business women in Coral Gables who are rated among the pioneers are young because Coral Gables is young-barely 22 years old. In the category of pioneer is Celia Snow, third subject in the Riviera-Time series of stories of career girls and charter members of the Coral Gables Soroptimist Club. Mrs. Snow (Celi to her friends and family) confesses to your reporter, that she was neither a business woman nor a careerist when she came to Coral Gables to reside in 1934. She knew nothing about merchandising, the art of selling or any other intricacy which seems to mark today's specialized businesses. However, Mrs. Snow wanted to do something. She began looking about her and discovered, that in 1934, no shop devoted exclusively to the sale of women's apparel existed. Every feminine shopper had to go to Miami five miles away to buy things for her own wardrobe. Then and there the Coral Gables Dress Shop came into being at 2004 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, with a somewhat frightened, but determined little woman at the head of the establishment. Success marked her undertaking for the women of Coral Gables were grateful for their first exclusively women's shop and patronized it. A year or so later hats and a dressmaking shop were added. However, "those first years were years of experience and learning," Mrs. Snow said, "I let the customers do the talking and I just listened, for I knew if I kept still they would never realize how little I knew." Mrs. Snow has truly pioneered. She entered at once into civic work. She was a member of the Merchants Bureau and served on many of its committees, especially helping with the annual Christmas programs. She served two years as president of the Coral Gables Business and Professional Women's Club and has been an active member for more than ten years. In private life, Mrs. Snow is Mrs. George W. Snow, wife of Captain Snow, senior pilot for Pan American World Airways. Their attractive home at 2522 Madrid Street with its completely equipped outdoor fireplace (built under covered loggia from house garden) is the gathering place for many parties, and the center of entertaining for the family of three daughters and son, all grown. Daughters Doris and Dorothy are the only ones at home now. MRS. SNOW -Pilkington Photo Barbara is married and resides in Freeport, Maine, and George, like his father, is a pilot for Pan American, flying the London route. The Snow family are members of the Country Club of Coral Gables, and Mrs. Snow is a member of the Coral Gables Woman's Club.
