Firm Gertrude Charms First Nighters In Well Cast 'Meet the Wife' Offering

By JOAN FRYMARK Phyllis Rowland, playing the part of Mrs. Gertrude Lennox. proved to the first night audience at the Country Club Theatre Group production of "Meet The Wife," that she had been well-cast in the leading role of an active society leader and pseudo-efficient wife and mother. Confident that she could make no wrong decisions, the little woman successfully mastered her tactic problem of having two very much-alive husbands. Mrs. Rowland's acting produced a vivid character who caught and held audience attention throughout the comedy. Her mastery of the role provided the channel through which the humorous plot was held together. Victor Stauwton, effeminate, yet prudish suitor of Mrs. Lennox' daughter, was well acted by Rolf Elliott. His amusing quips and actions provided for the majority of the humorous scenes in the play. Lovely Muriel Marshal portrayed with ease and efficiency the part of Doris Bellamy, the obedient daughter who needed only the assurance of her returned father to start a minor revolt. The supporting cast, well-chosen because they seemed to naturally fit into their roles without overwriting were: Philip Lord, prominent author who turns out to be Mrs. Lennox' first husband, played by Ted Hodge; Harvey Lennox, the mild-willed second husband, acted by Walter S. Ashby; Gregory Brown, ambitious New York reporter and Doris' secret passion, played by Donald Leigh, and Alice and William, the two servants portrayed by Neeva and Edison Archer, Jr. Robert E. P. Bakke, III did the excellent job of putting the eight actors through their paces to produce a fast-moving three-act comedy. The plot centers around an avid society woman and ruling wife who lives up to her social duty by having as her house guest a prominent author visiting her town. However, extreme complications arise when said author turns out to be none other than the wife's first husband who was supposedly lost in an accident ten years before, but actually ran away to pursue his secret ambition. In the third act, her second husband attempts the same method of getting away from it all, but in the final analysis, lacks the courage. Romance enters the play when mama tries to marry her daughter off to Victor, but the daughter's boy friend arrives in time to elope and turn the tables. When all is said and done, Mrs. Lennox, with her usual poise and assurance, decides that the situation is quite fine after all and just as she had unknowingly planned it. Credit for the attractive scenery and props for the play goes to Hazel Kennedy, stage manager, who was assisted by Lois Williams and George Nicholls on scenery and Chica Nugent, Florence Ashby, Clara Binns and Sam Elcook, Jr., on properties.
