Central Miami News Letter

By MARY HICKEY Another Labor Day weekend has come and gone, and from all indications, the men-folk of Frog Hollow took the holiday at its face value, and "Mayor" Davies was kept busy supervising any number of projects around the neighborhood. We saw Dr. George Schmitt busily pushing his beautiful new lawn mower; Fred Dieselhorst planting fruit trees with the help of Harry Van Riper; Fran Hickey and Larry Lawrence planting an Ivora hedge with all the efficiency of a pair of seasoned gardeners, and Mr. Russell diligently weeding his lawn. And speaking of projects-those of us in the community who are still without telephones are watching with great interest the laying of those cables down on Bird Road and hoping that perhaps it won't be too long before we will be adding a telephone bill to our monthly collection. Another project soon to get under way, so we understand, will be the laying of additional water lines to supplement those already here-a project which should definitely please all our local "gardeners", who have only too often turned on the hose and been greeted by a very meagre spray. Birthday Party A high spot of the week-end for the small fry in the neighborhood was a birthday party given by Mrs. Frank J. Paskewich in honor of her young son, Kip, and her baby daughter, Krista. Kip, who is five years old, was born August 21st, while Krista, who celebrated her very first birthday, was born September 2nd. Picking August 29th as a happy medium, Mrs. Paskewich celebrated the occasions by entertaining 21 children, together with 16 accompanying parents, at a good old-fashioned cake and ice cream party! Real Floridians Incidentally, Mr. and Mrs. Paskewich, who reside at 3700 S. W. 60th Avenue, are among the few "Frog Hollowites" who are real Floridians, both of them having lived in Miami since childhood. They are both graduates of the University of Miami and Mr. Paskewich is football coach at Miami Beach Senior High School and will be remembered by football fans as having been selected as winner of the Herald Award two years ago "Coach of the Year". Mrs. Paskewich studied painting at the University and still finds time to follow it as a hobby. Among several lovely old paintings in her home is one of the coral rock pillars which stand at the entrance to Frog Hollow. The painting was done at a time when our community here did not even exist, and Mrs. Paskewich says she never dreamed that she would someday be living here! Meet Your Neighbors Our weekly tour of the neighborhood yesterday gave us the opportunity of meeting two more families who have decided to call Frog Hollow "home". Mr. and Mrs. Harrell Fincher of 3720 S. W. 60th Avenue have lived in South Florida for a number of years, but like the rest of us are newcomers to Frog Hollow. Mrs. Fincher came here originally from Clearwater, Fla., while Mr. Fincher hails from Atlanta, Ga. Making up the rest of the Fincher household are Mary Frances, their three - year - old daughter, and "Pepper", a Kerry Blue terrier. Mr. Fincher served in the Army during the war as a ground officer connected with the B-29 training program, and is presently in the insurance business in Miami. Another "Railroader" Further on down the street we found Mr. and Mrs. Payton Scheppe of 3524 S. W. 60th Avenue. Mr. Scheppe hails originally from Kansas City, Kansas, but has called South Florida home for a number of years. Mrs. Scheppe came here with her husband from Jacksonville, Fla. During the war Mr. Payton served as an Observation Pilot with the Field Artillery, but since his discharge has returned to his position as District Freight Agent for the Illinois Central Railroad. Although the Scheppes have many interests, their main "hobby" at the moment is their young son, Payton, Jr., who will celebrate his first birthday the end of this month. Entertains at Dinner Dr. and Mrs. George Leonard of Miami Beach were the guests Thursday evening of Dr. and Mrs. George Schmitt of S. W. 60th Avenue for dinner at the Coral Gables Country Club. Following dinner the party attended the performance of "Meet The Wife", the current production of the Country Club Theatre Group.

SURPRISE PACKAGE

An evil-looking land mine was unexpectedly dug up by Dale Gretton of Lansing, Mich., when he was a machinist's mate, second class, with the Navy's Seabees on Saipan, where he operated a shovel crane. How did he react to his "surprise package"? After his initial startled cry of "Wow!", he said, "It seemed like ten years before I got it back on the ground.
