Prizes are listed at five-player intervals from fifth place to sixtieth place and include merchandise offered by Jaycee members. Entries for the tournament close today and participants must make own matches with at least two playing together.

Survey Of Clothing Habits Prompted New Men's Store

If you men noticed two well-dressed young men looking your clothes over as you walked down Ponce de Leon Blvd., or standing around the University of Miami campus, or at the junior-senior prom admiring your suit, did you wonder if you were dressed properly or notice that they were writing down information in a small notebook? All last season, William Labow, formerly of Charleston, West Virginia, and his associate, Jack Brill of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania made a survey of what the young business-professional men of Coral Gables and the university students preferred in clothing. What they found convinced them they wanted to open a men's clothing shop in Coral Gables. The two young men went to work and the first of September opened the University Shop, 2828 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Mr. Labow, for 17 years the merchandise manager for the student department in a men's haberdashery in Charleston, came to Miami for a vacation last winter and became sold on the idea of opening a store for young men in Coral Gables. In a questionnaire sent to both the business men of the city and the university students. His survey of Coral Gables' main streets, the university campus, the dances, the local cleaning establishments, showed that the men preferred national brands of clothing. He established contact with national manufacturers by designing a 10-page booklet showing the desirability of Coral Gables for such a shop as his. His booklet shows pictures of Coral Gables, the large shopping center, the advertising possibilities through the Coral Gables Riviera-Times, the radio station, the school publications, and the population of Coral Gables and the University of Miami. National advertisers saw the need for such a store and getting the merchandise was no problem, declared the new Coral Gables resident. Contact was established with an air freight service by the new shop, making it possible to order merchandise and have it delivered within the same day by air. "We plan on giving the men what they want, when they want it, and at the price they want to pay," he said. Since presenting merchandise to the public is the high point in any business, Mr. Labow and Mr. Brill have made their shop eye-appealing by such features as light that go on when a dressing room is occupied, individual keys to the dressing rooms, indirect lighting, and attractive display booths and fixtures. Formal opening of the shop is scheduled for September 25th when gifts will be given to those attending.

HALIFAXES RETURN HOME Sailing Trip Was Fun But Lots of Work, Too

Taking a 50-foot schooner to sea for a vacation turned out to be more work than play for Mr. and Mrs. John Halifax, 3501 Durango, Coral Gables. The Halifaxes, former Massachusetts residents, went to New England for their summer vacation, and while there decided to try their sailing skill. The couple had a schooner of their own when they lived in the northern state, but Mrs. Halifax confided it had been quite a while since they had taken one to sea. Halifax Is Skipper Mr. Halifax handled the ship as they cruised the Atlantic waters, Cape Cod Canal, and Buzzards Bay, while Mrs. Halifax acted as "chief cook and bottle washer". While in New England the Coral Gables residents and their party took in the summer boat races at Marblehead. Clubs Very Gay "Boats came from all over the northern shore for this event," declared Mrs. Halifax. "The yacht clubs are very gay, and large crowds throng to see the show. There were hundreds of sailing boats and every other kind out for the races." Two days before Mr. and Mrs. Halifax and the three other crew members started the trip a whale was sighted close to shore. Two hundred and twenty-five newspapermen were on a fishing boat near the shore when the whale blew within forty feet of the boat. One of the newsmen got picture of the whale, although, according to the Halifaxes the boat almost capsized as all the reporters rushed to the side of the ship to see the whale. Saw No Whale The Halifax party were worried that a whale might be sighted after they put out to sea, but high winds caused the only wrinkled brows during the whole trip. "There was lots of good eating," declared Mrs. Halifax. We had a bathtub on the schooner, where we kept fresh lobsters and other seafood, then cooked them in sea water." "We did a little fishing while we were at sea, although we don't mention it, for our baby, Verona, caught the largest fish of all, a flounder," admitted the Coral Gables matron. Mrs. Halifax said that the trip was wonderful, although her husband is still nursing swollen hands from pulling in the sails on the schooner during rough weather.

Businessmen's Spanish Course Is Announced

Riddle Inter-American college will inaugurate September 22 a special 100-hour course in conversational Spanish, assembled at the request of Greater Miami business and professional men and women who want to put the language into immediate use, Col. Arthur E. Boudreau, director, said Thursday. Some 20 physicians, lawyers, import-export men and professional businessmen will be among those in the starting group. Classes will be from 8 to 9:45 a. m. and from 7 to 8:45 p. m. The special course may be completed in 10, 12 or 16 weeks, depending upon whether the classes are taken three, four or five days per week. Col. Boudreau said the course is designed to meet the practical aspects of conversational ability and understanding of Spanish in banks, stores, and other business and professional offices. Coral Gables already has felt the need for Spanish in its Miracle Mile and business center, Col. Boudreau said, as evidenced by requests to the college from businesses for Spanish-speaking graduates.
