INTRODUCING THE SOROPTIMISTS Successful Careerist Neher Follows Photography as Hobby
One of Coral Gables' astute business women is Lucile Neher, Mrs. M. L. Neher in private life, and subject of the fourth in a series of Riviera-Times stories of career girls, charter members of the Coral Gables Soroptimist Club. Mrs. Neher, as Lucile Pretz of Columbus, Ohio, began her career in 1925 with the City of Miami Beach, following her business education at Ohio State University in her home town. "It was boom time and the promised adventure in Miami as advertised, that really brought me to South Florida," Mrs. Neher told your reporter, "and I fell in love with the whole area, and knew from the start that this is where I would make my home". From that self promise, Mrs. Neher never deviated. The former Ohio miss not only fulfilled five years with the booming and exciting town of Miami Beach in its city offices, but delved into the selling game and was with Milgrim's, one of the swank Lincoln Road shops It was nothing in those lush spending days, for a customer to pay $225 for a little beaded number and they paid those fabulous prices as easily as a customer buys a little $25 number today, she said. Soon after her marriage to Mr. Neher, whom she met in Miami, the Nehers, Mr. and Mrs., moved to Coral Gables for Mr. Neher had built the Model Laundry at 4100 Aurora St., the first of its kind in the Kraft section, set aside by the planning board for industries in Coral Gables. Mrs. Neher became secretary-treasurer of the incorporated company. However, being an officer of a flourishing laundry business did not deter Mrs. Neher from following her hobbies of travel and photography. In 1935 she made a memorable trip by boat and plane to South America, accompanied by Pauline Spafford, then news editor of the Miami Riviera, later MRS. NEHER -Pilkington Photo Maj. Spafford of the WAC, during the war, and now on General MacArthur's staff in Tokyo. Going places and seeing things was what these two friends liked to do and they did not take the beaten paths, but delved into the bypaths for pictures and stories of the little known. In 1941 they again packed for Mexico and the Latin American countries. When the modern swank Marvel Cleaners, Inc., was built at 16 Coral Way, on Miracle Mile in 1941 a modern dark room for her photography hobby was incorporated into the building by the president of the new concern, Lucile Neher. For recreation, the Nehers who reside at 3004 Segovia street, choose golf. They are members of the Riviera Country Club.
