Frog Hollow News Letter

By MARY HICKEY All our lives we've always felt a slight twinge of envy when we met people who lived in places with such dignified names as "morningside Heights", "Gramercy Park", or "Rittenhouse Square" and we've long harbored a dream of someday becoming a resident of a community similarly named. Fate has an uncanny way, however, of taking things into her own hands—and in this instance, it looks as though we were responsible for giving her the cue! As the result of a humorous incident it looks as though we, together with all our neighbors, are destined to dwell in a community with the far from dignified name of "Frog Hollow"! And strangely enough, we like it! With all due apologies to the original founder of this community we feel, and apparently our readers do too, that "Frog Hollow" has much more "character" than does "Central Miami"—which is in itself a misleading name, as this area is neither "Central" nor "Miami". So, from now on in, folks, you can look for this little column under the heading of "Frog Hollow"—and who knows, perhaps someday that may even come to be adopted as the official name of our little colony. Our deepest sympathy goes to Sam Porter, over on 60th Avenue, for the loss of his mail-box! Sam's mail-box was indeed an ornamental asset to the street—but the other night it was practically demolished by some buggy-auto who was evidently having a little trouble keeping on the road! We're sure it couldn't have been a "Frog Hollowite" who was responsible for such a foul deed! Gwen and Nook Tuckerman, of 60th Court, were on the receiving end of a very delightful surprise one evening last week. A group of their friends gave them a surprise "housewarming" and arrived on their door-step laden with useful and ornamental gifts, as well as a completely prepared dinner! In keeping with the tradition of making birthdays "something special", Mr. and Mrs. George Schmitt of 60th Avenue celebrated the third birthday of their young son, "Tipper", by entertaining a group of children at a party this past Tuesday. "Tipper", whose real name is George, Jr. (also Wendell, hw!) as his guests Judy Vetter, Julia Towson, Doris Buchanan, Pat Dekle, Rusty and Danny McKitterick, Sandy Swanson, Jean Hemingway, Jay Kumerdank, Barbara Lawrence, John, Charles, Douglas and Gordon Brown, and last but by no means least, little 4-months-old Keith Dekle, who apparently enjoyed the proceedings every bit as much as the other youngsters. In keeping with our custom of introducing at least one new family each week, we paid a visit the other night to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Estes of 3548 S. W. 60th Avenue. Mr. Estes has lived in Florida for some twenty years or more, but Mrs. Estes came here, after her marriage, from East Orange, New Jersey. The Estes have one child, Betty Anne, who is 4 1/2 years old. Mr. Estes served for five years in the U. S. Army as a major in the infantry, and since his discharge from the service has been connected with the Veterans Administration as a contact representative. Incidentally, most of the lovely shrubbery around their home was given to them as "housewarming gifts" by Mr. Estes' business associates — a mightly nice idea, we think! Mrs. Estes' favorite pastime is sunning herself on the beach with young Betty Anne, but Mr. Estes prefers something more on the active side and spends most of his leisure hours on the golf course.

'Newcomers' Assisting at Youth Center

Welcome volunteers at the Youth Center for the past three weeks have been members of the "Newcomers Club" which boasts a membership of more than 50. Two ladies a day have been manning the snack bar and Mrs. Fred A. Greeley has been helping in the directors office. Mrs. Harold Robinson is chairman of the Club's Youth Center Committee. The Soroptimist Club, another newly organized club composed of the professional women of Coral Gables has presented the girls of the Youth Center with three basketballs. Miss Betty Ward will be guest speaker at their luncheon Friday, September 12 at Ely's Cafeteria where she will tell of the needs for operational money. Both the Newcomers Club and the Soroptimists will sell tickets for the Youth Center Follies in the women's division.
