Art Times

By Robert S. Hurwitz Since this is the start of a new column and keeping up with the TIMES is important, you should consider me just an "astronaut in art" seeking to explore the depths of artistic dullness and the heights of painting achievement. ARTIS[T]S NOT CREATED EQUAL My views on artists is that all men and women are not created equal, and I quote, the noblest subject matter becomes trite in the hands of an inferior painter, while such matter-of-fact things as apples and old shoes become sublime in the hands of a master. It shall therefore be my pleasure to uncover both breeds and report to you on them. CAPSULE REVIEW OF LAST SIX MONTHS "We're probably all looking for improvement but the past winter gallery showings really gave Miami its best exposure to art styles ever. LOWE GALLERY Lowe Gallery is this year's interest leader for showing variety - varying degrees of quality - but definitely leadership. The Spanish show last month showed a daring desired departure from the norm. In fact, this show was the most memorable of the year. Like it or not, it was big, bold, and appreciated. GRANVILLE FISHER GALLERY. It clearly demonstrated a place for itself as an important factor to Miami art. Fisher's showings of local artists was only fair...sometimes farce...but always quantity enough to find good works. The more I personally view Granville Fisher's own paintings, the more I see serious artistic advancement. His works are inventive and imaginative. His productivity allows for experimentation and technical advancement. ARGER GALLERY New gallery adding spice to the local scene in a perfect setting for good viewing. VILLAGE CORNER Gets our vote for doing most with small space. Also, no other gallery has given of its space as willingly for showing lesser-knowns. MIAMI MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Renders a constant source of inspiration in paintings and reading material that should be attended and used by viewers and artists more frequently. MIRELL GALLERY Showed best in exhibits of drawing and sketches. GROVE HOUSE Perhaps the major step in progress of the year for encouraging artists to exhibit and the public to buy. Put the season all together - it spells "Brighter Outlook." A lot of good, serious, contemporary moderns are hiding...either ashamed to exhibit or too moody to try. Let's look at you this year! Also more males and less female exhibitors would be appreciated. SUGGESTION We suggest that galleries designate and specially advertise a recognized "art night" each week to encourage family looking and joint buying. This column can be yours and mine. If you'll take the time to write your agreements or disagreements on art, people and things, we'll get them published.

Times' Site To Be Razed For Building

(Continued from page 1) which the Times leased from Harum until it changed to the Miami Herald last month, is up for sale. The Times vacated the building only last week. After 99 years, Harum will become owner of the office building itself. "I'm just mean enough to be around then," he said jokingly this week. He likes to recount how he bought the building in the first place. He had the Times' office on Miracle Mile, where Carlotta Lewis' real estate office is now. The owner raised his rent in the early '40's from $50 to $75 monthly and Harum scat. He that is proud eats up himself; pride is his own glass, his own trumpet, his own chronicle. — Shakespeare.
