PEOPLE, Places & Things
We have nice neighbors next door to us, the Coral Way Cleaners. Thursday, when we moved into our new building, they came to our rescue by calling us to the phone. We were up to our knees in desks, boxes and books and telephones, but the phones were not yet installed. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Owen are the third owners of the Coral Way Cleaners, the first of its kind to open in Coral Gables. The first owner, a man by the name of Gillespie, built the building at 249 Coral Way (now 249 Miracle Mile) named his business after the Way, and with his family lived on the second floor. The present owners have 10 employes. ★ ★ ★ Mrs. Louis Easton, 551 Jeronimo Dr., was discussing the fact that women will not reveal their true age. A member of the Westview Country Club, she said that recently a notice of a women's golf tournament was posted and it read, "Women members 45 or over, please sign." "Nobody signed," she said. ★ ★ ★ His honor, the mayor of Coral Gables, Robert L. Searle will be the speaker Tuesday, at the Hi-Neighbor Club luncheon meeting at the Riviera Country Club. ★ ★ ★ Mrs. Denis V. Renuart, 1221 Mariola Ct., who was installed the first president of the Mercy Hospital auxiliary, 10 years ago, will install the new officers Wednesday at the Riviera Country Club. Service pins totaling more than 17,000 hours of volunteer service will be awarded. And a check for $12,000 earmarked for cancer treatment of patients will be presented to Sister Louis Edwin, retiring president and hospital administrator during the luncheon. ★ ★ ★ Robert R. Reynolds, son of Mrs. R. C. Lau, 3016 Alhambra Cir., will graduate from Sewanee Military Academy, Sewanee, Tenn., in the June commencement. Mr. and Mrs. Lau will attend. Cadet Reynolds was a member of the Gorgas Guard which was Tennessee's representative at the Presidential inaugural Parade in 1961. He has served as date manager for the Cotillion Club and was a member of last year's varsity football team. ★ ★ ★ Marie Alicia Amerise, now doing library research in New York, writes her parents, Dr. and Mrs. A. D. Amerise, 3833 Alhambra Ct., that she is sure, she never acted like the children who come into the library today. "They're terrible," she wrote. Marie Alicia graduated from the University of Miami, took her master's at UCLA. ★ ★ ★ The I. S. Eubanks family, 736 Seville Ave., are walking on air these days or should we say they are sailing on the ship of luck. They are winners of a contest, - subject: "Why You Wanted A Boat." Now they are the owners if a boat, a trailer, and an outboard motor. And there are three young Eubanks boys to enjoy that boat: Dan, 15 (a Times carrier); Bill, 11, and Timmy, 5. Now what will a family like that do with a boat? With the bay and ocean but a hop, skip or jump away. ★ ★ ★ Mrs. Frank Kerdyk, 536 Almeria Ave., looked in the pink of health at the May breakfast of the Coral Gables Woman's Club. She was wearing a pink frock and leaning on a cane. But she came through the ordeal of a broken hip (when she was on her annual visit to New York last summer) and has been all of this time recuperating . . . Mrs. Henry Clay Anderson, 3701 Toledo St., had her niece, and house guest, Mrs. T. S. Todd of Richmond, Ky., as her luncheon guest at the breakfast. ★ ★ ★ Mrs. Ray Berrin sang "Orchids to you" at the closing meeting of the Sunset Division, National Council of Jewish Women. The meeting was held at Hillel House, University of Miami campus. As she sang she tossed orchids to the members for their fulfillment of council projects, for the year.
