Meters to Stay Gone Councilmen Take Action Early

By ED KNIGHT Correspondent South Miami Council, elated with its decision to take parking meters off the city's streets for an eight-week trial period, has decided to keep the meters off the streets for an indefinite period. With several weeks remaining on the two-month trial period, Council decided last week that results already have been shown by the trial period. The result: it is best for the shoppers, the merchants and the South Miami Chamber of Commerce to keep the meters off the streets. "I'm delighted with the Council's decision," said H. W. MacDonald, executive secretary and manager of the Chamber of Commerce, who attended the Council meeting. WAS GO BETWEEN MacDonald has acted as a go-between in the merchants' battle to get the meters off the streets. It was MacDonald who took a survey of the city's merchants showing that a big majority of the city's businessmen wanted the meters removed. And it was MacDonald who presented that petition to the Council requesting the no-meter trial period. "There is all the difference in the world without the meters," he said. "There is a more relaxed atmosphere in the city. The shoppers don't have to dash in a store to buy an item and then dash out again. They are relaxed now. "They park their cars in one location and know they have two hours of free time to take care of their shopping needs." Whether city business has been increased through removal of the meters is a question of who you ask. Most merchants agree, however, that business has been stimulated. In a survey taken by The Times two weeks ago, most merchants said that they were glad the meters have been removed and hope they never come back. One merchant said South Miami may be taking some business away from Coral Gables which still has parking meters and enforces feeding the meters both on the street and in off-street parking lots. South Miami's removal of the parking meters was prompted by the number of shopping centers surrounding the city where parking is free at all times. The merchants, in appealing to the city for removal of the meters, said the city's merchants were losing customers through heavy enforcement of the feeding of the meters. How long the meters will be kept off the streets is unknown at this time. The term "indefinitey" was defined to mean anywhere from six months to forever. Though parking meters will not be on the city's streets, the meters in off-streek parking lots will be operated. Parking on the streets now is for two-hour periods with tires marked by the city's police officers. One group of people who will lose out on the removal of the meters are South Miami's taxpayers. City Attorney C. B. Petry estimated $10,000 a year will be lost through removal of the meters. PARKING METERS' fate in South Miami was decided last week when the Council voted to keep them removed. With this wonderful thought, how easily sleep will come. A sleep that's alive with carefree dreams of happy times forever. And who's to change these dreams into reality? The opportunity is shared by many, including our business and industrial leaders. The services all of us render, the products we make, the jobs we create, and the support we give to civic activities are helping to build a world where all can live happier ever after.
