by helen reynolds society editor It wasn't the war of the roses, but the battle of the buds Tuesday when the Coral Gables Woman's Club held its annual May breakfast at the Coral Gables Country Club. Pictured are Mrs. Frank E. Harlow, 931 Obispo Ave., and her luncheon guest and new daughter-in-law Amanda (Mrs. John Rees) Harlow, 24 Minorca Ave. Amanda's hat of white petals and buds set the theme of the hats worn and the flower hats predominated. Amanda tells us she and Frank have bought a new home in the Town and Ranch Estates. It will be better than MRS. JOHN HARLOW, MRS. FRANK HARLOW apartment house living she said. Mrs. Frank Harlow is also an active member of the Coral Gables Garden Club—and that means she digs! * * * Talk about a quickie trip. Dorothy (Mrs. Thurston) Adams and her husband, Dr. Adams, professor of Physical Education, at the University of Miami, will spend a month, lacking one day, in California. They will travel by air, automobile, and board the dome train out of Chicago. They leave May 20, and return June 19. In Los Angeles they will see their daughter, Peggy (Mrs. Douglas) Sandburg, and be present for Doug's receiving a scholarship to John Hopkins University, Baltimore, where he will have a residency in pediatrics. They will also see son, Sam, a lieutenant in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Ord, Calif., who will study toward his master's at Columbia, this fall. Also while in L.A., Dr. Adams will look after the convention of his fraternity Sigma Chi. * * * She's a charter member. Susan Esslinger, a freshman at the University of Georgia, has been pledged to Delta Zeta Sorority, and she will be one of 46 charter members since the Zeta Pi chapter of D.Z. came to the campus this Spring. Susan, an art major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Esslinger, 311 Mendoza Ave. * * * Our three local country clubs have joined forces to present a summer dance program for the combined memberships. The first is scheduled for Friday, at the Riviera Country Club. There will be an adult couple from each club who will act as hosts at the Friday night dances. And the charge? One dollar per couple; one dollar for stag. Announcements of the June, July and August parties will be made. Dance band will be on hand from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. for each party.

What I Tell My Daughters
By a Gables Mother DEAR JOAN: Last week I promised to tell you how to get along with people. This is a very important step toward popularity, and even involves those you don't care for particularly. The first thing to do is be interested in others. Listen when someone talks to you. Don't try to be the center of the conversation yourself. If you learn to pay attention to what is being said, people will go out of their way to see and talk with you. By sympathetic and understanding — even if sometimes you must feign it. If you want to be a good companion, you must be helpful and, most of all, patient. And you must be responsive — at least in your facial expressions. Don't just stand there and listen, even if you are bored. Be animated! No one likes to talk to a stick of wood. When you learn to be interested in others, you are on the second step to popularity. Next week I will conversation and what effect yours can have on your friends. LOVE, MOTHER
