18 THE CORAL GABLES TIMES Thursday, May 11, 1961 Looking Back at Woman's Club
Mrs. Worley Is Installed Head Of Woman's Club
Mrs. M. Lewis Hall, 751 N. Greenway Dr., must have felt a bit of nostalgia when she installed the new officers of the Coral Gables Woman's Club Thursday in May breakfast ceremonies. She was president of the club 1951-53, and now as president of the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs, she was on home grounds, installing her own home club officers. The new officers are Mrs. John H. Worley, president; Mrs. Lloyd Rees, first vice president; Mrs. Gene Gabriel, second vice president; Mrs. Thomas Holdcraft, recording secretary. Mrs. Roy Jensen, corresponding secretary; Mrs. S. Dansyear, financial secretary; Mrs. Arthur E. Darlow, treasurer. First director is Mrs. Louis Stajdel, immediate past president; Mrs. Winston W. Wynis, second director and Mrs. Stanley P. Fosgate, third director. Mrs. Louis Stajdel is retiring president. Mrs. John Collier, Mrs. John Powell, and Mrs. Herbert Frink were decorations chairmen and Mrs. Jack Widdersheim was chairman of the programs.
Now, Those Were The Days
By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Staffer Past Presidents' table was ringside at the Coral Gables Woman's Club May breakfast. And two eldest in point of service, Mrs. William McKibben (1925-1926) and Mrs. Don Peabody (1926-28) headed the table. The club was organized in 1925. Mrs. Peabody, honorary life president of the club, is still quite active. Only a summer or two ago she took a round-the-world trip with four Gables friends. It was in 1926 with her late husband that she built the showplace they occupied for many years on De Soto Boulevard. It is located across from Venetian Pools. President of the club then, Mrs. Peabody made her home into a hub of activity. One of the laughs the Peabodys had was the daily trip of the sightseeing bus which stopped at the pool. The driver, with his megaphone, would point out the Peabody house and say, "The Peabody of the shirt company lives there." Malvina Peabody and Polly McKibben began comparing notes, when we asked which was the older. It turned out that Polly, who is in her late 70's was the older. Polly was practically sitting on top of the world at the moment. She said "I just received $50 for a 'Syllabary,' from Italy." A syllabary is a Japanese poem. Polly, who sells much of her poetry, writes every day in her studio at the home, she and Dr. McKibben built at 641 N. Greenway Dr. She also told us that when their daughter Dorothy was a little girl, she attended Miss Harris' School, then on Brickell Avenue, close by the Deering estate (now Vizcaya). Every morning she would drive Dorothy down, with her writing materials and or paint brushes and easel, and go over to the Deerings, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Mr. Deering would greet her and she would paint or compose, whichever muse held sway. MRS. McKIBBEN
