There's More to Bible School Than Reading the Scriptures
(This is the season for the annual Bible Schools in our community churches. With all the bustle of preparation afoot, we assigned a reported to find out what goes on in a typical school.) By RAYMOND LANG Times Staffer What does it take to make a Bible school? "One day, I walked into a Bible class and there was a rabbit," said J. W. Cooper Jr., minister of education at University Baptist Church, 3200 Sevilla St. "And they were talking about that rabbit and how God made that rabbit. "And sometimes the children will bring in leaves and flowers, anything from Nature. They'll talk about it and how God made it." Cooper used the rabbit to point out this: Underlying the Bible school must be a philosophy showing our relation to God. He also pointed out the importance of planning the program. What material should be used? How should it be presented? These questions are now coming to the forefront as University Baptist prepares for its June 12-23 Bible school. It is free and open to all youngsters 3-16 years old. "The principal purpose of Bible school," said Cooper, "is to teach the Bible to these children, to teach them the Christian way of life as it is taught in the Bible. "We really look forward to Bible study," he went on, "because it gives us a more concerted effort over a two-week period." The children will be with those of their own ages. So the material, much of it from work books, will be geared to their level. They'll learn to use their hands by making crafts. They'll be worship periods, as well as recreation periods. Cooper hastened to point out that "actual situations" are created in the classes to help adapt the children to real-life problems. For example, the children will learn the importance of sharing and cooperating by using building blocks and fingerpainting together. A Bible school takes a lot of planning," he said. University Baptist has been preparing since January. About 50 women will teach in the school. "And their role is very important," Cooper said.
