Soft Soap Becomes The Hard Sell And All Smells Sweetly
By JOE MORRIS Correspondent Mrs. Blanca Osorio Shedd, a Colombian by birth and an American now by marriage, owes her command of the English language to the delightful smell of a bar of soap. Dr. Ralph Boggs, international student director of the University of Miami, took a bath in Belem, Brazil, one night two years ago and the bar of soap he used changed the course of this lady's life. Returning from Rio de Janerio to Miami, Dr. Boggs stopped over for a short visit in the jungle town of Belem, nearly a hundred miles south of the Equator. Sitting in his hotel bathtub, he was delightfully impressed with the sudsy, soft and sweet smelling soap named, "Phebo." The label read: Odor do Rosas para toilette. Believing the Biblical quotation, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness," the doctor slipped a dozen cakes in his suitcase for some Saturday night bathing in the States. When the last soap suds disappeared he wrote the soap manufacturer in Belem and said, "Ship me more of that sweet smelling soap." The newspaper there thought it strange that an American would order soap from South America for use in the United States so they printed a story about the "Clean American" who was connected with an American university. Mrs. Shedd read the article and remembered it. Some months later she left Brazil to visit her husband's family in Texas. She stopped in Miami to talk to the "Clean American" and maybe soft-soap him some way into giving a scholarship to her son. But the tables turned. Dr. Boggs personally conducted her on a deluxe tour of the campus then introduced her to international student counselor Dr. Walter Allen who recalled living in Kuling, China, one summer with Mrs. Shedds father-in-law. This coincidence convinced her to cancel her trip to Texas and she signed up to study intensive English herself. This week she finished her first semester and starts straightway into the summer school session. She lives at 131 S.W. 52nd Ct. If you are ever on campus at UM and someone near you has the Odor do Rosas, just walk up to him and say, "Dr. Boggs, I presume!"
