City Manager Changes Position, Wants Joint Vote
Joint voter registration of Coral Gables and Dade County was recommended by City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. Tuesday. The recommendation, made by Robinson before the City Commission, was a reversal of a previous position taken by the city manager. Robinson, however, advised the City Commission to put off the move until after the municipal election of 1963. The city manager said it would take that long to merge the two systems together. City Commissioners, only three of whom were present, deferred taking action on the joint registration proposal until a full commission was present. The proposal for joint registration was advanced by Commissioner Joe Murphy recently. Murphy claims that 6,000 names would be added to the local voting list as a result. It was originally brought up by Bernard B. Weksler, a candidate for City Commission in the recent municipal election. Weksler and County Registrar Claude Brown appeared before the Commission Tuesday. Brown told the Commission he did not wish to comment on the proposal, but sai that six other Dade municipalities, including Miami, South Miami and West Miami, had joint registration and that he forsaw no difficulty in the addition of Coral Gables to the roll. Weksler told the Commission that action on the proposal must be taken before the July 1 deadline if joint registration is to be placed into effect before the next municipal election in 1963. Under the Metro Charter, the matter would have to wait two more years if not considered by the County this year.

The award was based on individual performance of duty in all phases of basic training, including leadership, initiative, military bearing, sportsmanship, response to orders, and a high over-all scholastic standing. Elect Directors Mile Merchants Adopt New Name
The Miracle Mile Merchants Association is no more. Mile Merchants met Tuesday night and decided to change the organization's name to Miracle Mile Association after narrowly voting down the name Miracle Mile Guild. The change came when the group, in the process of reactivation, decided they could get more publicity mileage out of the new label. A 15-man board of directors was selected which will elect anew slate of officers in a subsequent meeting. The new directors are Allan Abess, J. Baldi, Bernie Blanck, Charles Finkelstein, Albert H. Friedman, Robert Gallagher, Mrs. Harriet Grey, Don Mullen, Ray Pels. Dave Rayvis, Leon Rubinstein, Paul School, Carroll Seghers, Nat Winokur and Buck Newburger. Named to the honorary committee were Miracle Mile founders, George K. Zain, Roy Page, Jim Rankin and Sam Weissel.
