False Teeth, Gasless Cars Are Turnpike's Problems
The captain of the Sunshine State Turnpike highway patrol troop charmed the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club Tuesday and said in mock seriousness, "It's the largest group of traffic violators I've addressed this week." The speaker, Capt. C. E. Taylor, said there is no question about safety records of turnpikes over conventional roadways. He said the turnpike's record is 2.5 people killed per 100 million vehicle miles traveled while that on U.S. 1 is nearly 16 persons. All state roads average 9 persons, he said. And neither is speed the superhighway's biggest problem, said Captain Taylor. "It's driver fatigue and sleepiness. Less than two per cent of the vehicles checked by radar were found to be speeding." The turnpike limit is 65 miles an hour, day and night. The turnpike is 109 miles long and begins at Miami and runs north. It was opened Jan. 25, 1957, and is entirely financed by the people who use it. "It doesn't cost taxpayers a cent in taxes," the captain related. There are more highway patrolmen on the pike - 30 troopers - than elsewhere, he explained, because the turnpike authority wants it that way. The authority reimburses the state for all the men's salaries. Some miscellaneous turnpike data: There are 50 vehicle breakdowns a day; you can expect help on an average of within 30 minutes ... Troopers carry gas in their patrol cars for one of the most common difficulties. A lost and found department is operated and currently has, among other things, 11 sets of false teeth ... A recent survey showed 52 per cent of the cars coming onto the Turnpike were from the Midwest and. Western areas of the U.S., disproving the common belief that a large majority of the traffic is originated in the Eastern U.S. * * * 'A Good Gimmick' "A good gimmick" is what a veteran Florida Highway Patrol captain called the Labor Day lights-on campaign. "I expect some day we'll see people driving all the time with their lights on in the day," Capt. C. E. Taylor told the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club Tuesday. "Greyhound buses are doing so now. They say it helps alert motorists and has cut down the number of times their drivers have to leave the road to avoid collision." The captain wryly added that when the lights-on approach is the order of the day he expects the lights will be operated byturning on the ignition. There were too many run-down batteries result g from forgetful motorists on Labor Day, he noted.
Publix Site Seen Okay Despite a Disapproval
The Gables City Commission reversed itself Tuesday when it decided not to vacate an alley for a new Publix market. Nevertheless, Publix, which has the proper commercial zoning, does not appear to be permanently prevented from building in the block bordered by Monza Avenue and Yumuri and Nervia streets behind Howard Johnson's on South Dixie Highway. The alley cuts the property in half, but the property is large enough for Publix to locate its market on either half and use the other half for parking without commission approval. Publix officials Tuesday, however, indicated that they would try to come up with a plan acceptable to residential property owners in the area. Approximately 40 persons appeared before the City Commission Tuesday to protest an ordinance on second reading vacating the alley and another item changing facing of the building.
