Gables Says OK On SM Laundry

The sometimes bitter fight between owners of the South Miami Professional Building and South Miami Hospital over the proposal to hook up a coin-operated laundry to the Coral Gables sewer system reached partial settlement Tuesday. Coral Gables City commissioners reversed themselves a second time by voting unanimously to allow the hook up. The proposal of Wash-Bowl, Inc. the tie in to the City's system through the South Miami Hospital lines had been approved initially by the City, but reversed on the protest of Hospital directors. Hospital officials, while agreeing to some of the provisoes tagged on by the City Commission in making the approval, reserved the right to sue for the $7,500 hook up fee claimed by the owners of the building. The hospital claims it paid the owners more than $45,000 for the lines. The hospital has lease with option to purchase agreement with the owners. The owners have agreed to guarantee that the hospital's sewer facilities will not be adversely affected up to a 300-bed capacity — twice present facilities — and hole the hospital harmless in any agreement to provide the sewer service. City Attorney Ted Semple and Joe Fitzgerald, attorney for the owners both contended that the hospital had no legal right in the agreement between the owners and Wash-Bowl, Inc. "It looks like we're buying a pig in a poke," said Dr. Roy Cherry in commenting on the $105,000 hospital rental agreement with option to buy at an unstipulated price. Meanwhile, in South Miami Tuesday night, the City Council approved on third reading a franchise agreement with the building owners to permit the extension of lines through that community.

Holiday Inn Opening

The sign at the new Holiday Inn on South Dixie Highway across from the University of Miami says, "Opening Nov. 25th." But that sign was one of the first items erected when construction began months ago and the date a distant estimated target. The actual date isn't too far from that, however. Owner Ben Gaines reports that the 155 guest rooms should be ready for occupancy by around Dec. 18.

UM Smoker -- You're Invited

Tickets went on sale this week to the first annual University of Miami athletic smoker, sponsored by the Gables Chamber of Commerce. The event, expected to attract 200 people, will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, 7 p.m., at Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club. The evening is called "Hurricane Night" and will be in honor of UM's football team and its coaching staff of 12. The team and staff will be the guests of honor. H. T. (Dutch) Shulenberger, a Miami insurance man, will be the master of ceremonies. Awards will be made and some humorous skits presented. Both Coach Andy Gustafson and quarterback George Mira are slated to give some personal impressions of the then just-concluded regular season's schedule. The tickets, costing $7, pay for one guest plus providing a dinner for a member of the team. In charge of the affair is the University Relations Committee of the Chamber, Ed Crowley, chairman. Tickets may be obtained at the Chamber of Commerce office or from Crowley, Rolfe Neill, Bernie Blanck, Ham Hayes, Albert Jacobson, Curtis Howell at Polly Davis Cafeteria, Dr. Fred Evans, Frank Maury, Bernard Weksler, Hans Wedemeyer, Joe Murphy or Dr. Robert Cherry. The Plaza No Place For Autos

Cartagena Plaza — the scene of several accidents in recent months — was ripped up again early Monday by a speeding woman driver. Gables Officer B. H. Thomas reported that Eunice K. Thomas, 107 Majorca Ave., put down many feet of skid marks before she plowed through the park at the intersection of Le Jeune Road and Sunset Drive. The airline stewardess was eastbound on Sunset at the time. Her car tore up the grass and collided with the concrete monument base, just missing the old shoe replica. She was treated at South Miami Hospital for minor injuries. Her car sustained an estimated $300 damage. No estimate of damage to the Plaza was available. Thomas filed no charges.

Delayed Opening

Florsheim Shoes, which will have a store on Miracle Mile near the Miracle Theater, won't be ready for business until about the first of the year. A Florsheim official said this week that delays in getting architectural approval for the store front is responsible for the postponement. The store had hoped to be open Oct. 15.

'Whatever Language, Teenagers Same'

(Continued from Page 1) he lives in a masculine household of four brothers and no sisters. The situation became very apparent the first day at school, when Victor wouldn't sit at a table with mostly girls. He said that he would sit by himself. I don't know who was more ready to cry. We solved the problem by sitting at a table of mainly boys. This shyness showed up many other times. At any other gatherings, Victor would stay with all boys or sit by himself. This wasn't because he was shy of others, just of girls. LOVES TABLE TENNIS This led to another facet of his personality — his love for table tennis or ping-pong as it is called in Honduras. Table tennis is one of the favorite games there. Victor plays it extremely well. Let him play ping-pong all the time and life would be wonderful. No matter where we went, the first question asked was, "Do you play ping-pong?" Even at the Gables Homecoming Dance held at the University of Miami Student Union, Victor had to play ping-pong instead of dancing. Americans take our way of life for granted. Did you ever think of trying to explain how to use the telephone and that you must pick up the receiver to talk with the other persons? Or that when taking a shower, to close the shower curtain so that the bathroom isn't flooded? These are simple little things that we don't even think about, much less tell someone to do them. Yet my amigo didn't know them. SHOPPED ON MILE The first Saturday that Victor was here, we went shopping on Miracle Mile. With just about $22, he wanted to buy a wrist watch, a transistor radio, a windbreaker jacket, a hat, trousers, shirts, socks and a bathing suit. Much to his surprise, things were not so inexpensive as he had heard. Also, Latins have a custom of trying things on, removing them and saying that they fit perfectly without letting anyone see how it fits. This was nerve wracking when you feel responsible for how he spends his money. As an example, the first hat that Victor picked up came down over his eyes. He said that it fit perfectly and got out his money. But we made him get one the correct size after much broken Spanish and the use of my trusty old Spanish-English dictionary. 10-MINUTE RITUAL I know that it's hard to keep busy every minute of the day, but Victor has some unusual pastimes. One of them is brushing his teeth. The ritual involves at least 10 minutes before each meal and 10 minutes afterwards. But after a snack, it only takes five minutes. I guess it depends on the amount of food taken in. Also when bored, it's always good for a few minutes time. In Honduras it seems that they don't have full length mirrors. Combing his hair is a long process for Victor. It can take anywhere from five minutes to a half hour standing in front of the full length mirror. No matter how unusual all this may seem to you, it's wonderful to have an amigo, to get to know another person from what seems to be another world. The whole group of amigos are so friendly and congenial, that it seems we have known each other for much longer than a week. Whatever language is spoken, teenagers are the same all over the world.
