Big Fire Solution To Zoning
A spectacular $62,000 fire that destroyed a furniture warehouse Saturday night did what the City of Coral Gables had been unable to do for a long time—close down the operation. "It will not be rebuilt," City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said emphatically Monday. Robinson said that the Furniture Barn, located at Douglas Road and Marabella Avenue, is in a residentially zoned neighborhood and cannot be replaced without rezoning. It had been frequently the source of complaints about auction and other sales practices not permitted in the Gables. The fire drew several hundred spectators and aid from the Miami Fire Department. Twice, on Sunday at 6:34 a.m. and again at 8 p.m., Coral Gables Firemen had to return to the scene of the fire that injured four of their men (See BIG BLAZE, page 2)
SKUNK!
If Mrs. Edward Warner, of 4805 Riviera Dr., had any misgivings about the advice a Coral Gables policeman gave her on ridding herself of a skunk that entered her home, she has none now. She called police at 2:36 a.m. Nov. 22 to ask for help after she spotted the striped intruder in her bathroom. It was to Officer Charles A. Gouveia that she appealed. Gouveia comforted Mrs. Warner and calmly told her to close the doors to other rooms in the house, but leaving the bathroom, and front and back doors open. The colorful, but odiferous, animal would walk out of its own accord, Gouveia assured her. He added that he would be by at 7 a.m. to check. At 4 a.m. Mrs. Warner called back. Sure enough, the skunk had gone.
Metro Has Ideas for Us We'll Study Traffic
By MAURICE LABELLE Times Reporter | The City Commission plans to take up Saturday a report they have been sitting on since Sept. 25 on Metro's recommendations for downtown Coral Gables traffic. The recommendations would radically change traffic patterns if adopted. A conference meeting has been set up for Saturday morning to take up the five-page report. Metro has asked the City to study the recommendations and come up with some comments. Some of the major recommendations: Remove signal lights at Almeria Avenue and Ponce de Leon Boulevard; Salzedo Street and Aragon Avenue; Salzedo and Giralda Avenue. Install a neon "no left" sign facing east at Ponce de Leon and Miracle Mile. Placing dual lights at the main intersection of Miracle Mile and Ponce to make it easier to see the lights. Install a southbound left turn lag at Ponce and Andalusia Avenue. Reverse to one-way westbound operation Giralda between Galiano Avenue and Salzedo. Reverse to one-way eastbound operation Aragon between Merrick Way and Salzedo. Revert to two-way operation on Giralda between Salzedo and Le Jeune Road. Close Galiano between Merrick Way and Alhambra Circle. Remove parking on west curb north of Miracle Mile and Douglas Road. Remove median curb east of crosswalk on Miracle Mile at Douglas to provide left turn bay. Restrict parking on Andalusia at Ponce approach to provide turning lanes. Mark Andalusia east of Ponce for better distribution. Restrict parking on Galiano south of Miracle Mile, two blocks west on west curb and one block on east curb. Widen pavement (westbound) several hundred feet west of LeJeune on Alhambra to provide better alignment. The report adds that although cabling has been replaced to provide better synchronization in the shopping district, a new sampler is on Andalusia to aid the system.
City Says Its Boards Do Count
(Editorial on page 4) | The City Commission has decided to pay more attention to what its advisory board has to say. They agreed Tuesday to take up board reports at conference meetings before they are accepted at regular Commission meetings. "We don't give them enough consideration," Commissioner Franklin Evans said in moving for devoting more time to study of recommendations and proposals. He was backed by Commissioner George Wilson. The Commission had been receiving board reports at regular meetings, frequently without comment or further action. Two boards, Recreation Advisory and Planning recently said they weren't satisfied with their role.
It's Cold Outside!

Commission and Tinder Still Apart on Contract
(Editorial on Page 4) | Coral Gables City Commissioners are still trying to conclude a contract with Biltmore Pro Bill Tinder after weeks of discussing a new one. They want to cut his net income. Tinder's contract ran out Nov. 14. He has been unable to offer a contract acceptable to the City and Commissioners have not been able to counter offer one acceptable to him. Commissioners have been working towards what they believe will produce a $15,000 to $17,000 annual income for Tinder. Tinder is holding out for more money. According to the Commission, using Tinder's figures, he's now netting between $22,000 and $23,000 from his salary, Pro Shop, 19th Hole Restaurant, driving range, electric carts, hand cart storage, golf club repair, maintenance and storage operations. Income from golf lessons has not figured in negotiations. Commissioners Tuesday came up with still another proposal to present to Tinder after another drawn out conference session. Detailed figures on Tinder's gross and net earnings have been withheld by the City, but Mayor Robert L. Searle has assured The Times that they will be made available as soon as a contract is arrived at.
Her 48 Cents of Baked Goods Cost $8 Finally
Item: Bread, half dozen rolls, bun and couple of cookies, 48 cents. Item: Parking fee, $8. A Southwest woman threatened to take the matter to the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce this week after her car was towed away from a private bakery parking lot and she had to pay a $2 taxi fee and $6 towing fee to recover it. "They complain about no business in Coral Gables with things like that going on," said Mrs. Herman Teitelbaum, 2253 SW 16th St. She said she went into the Coral Gables Bakery, 2532 Ponce de Leon Boulevard around noon Saturday and returned five minutes later to find her car gone from the bakery parking lot in the rear. When she returned to the bakery to determine what had happened to her car, she said she was told that the lot was cleared twice a day by police. When she asked the owners what they were going to do about her car, she was told nothing would be done, Mrs. Teitelbaum said, and they wouldn't let me use the phone to call police, she claimed. Jacobs Plumbing Repairs & 30 Gal. Water Heaters $42.95, CA 1-3740 -Adv. Mrs. Teitelbaum said she had to go to Gables police station and later to the Coral Gables Garage and pay $6 to recover the car. "We have to take out those cars because we have to park our own cars," Mrs. Juliet Peacock, owner of the bakery, replied. She said no one at the bakery recalled the incident, but that they call frequently to have cars towed away from the two lots they have owned for 38 years. "Some customers buy something and go off all day," she said. "We always feel terrible when we have to do that," said Mrs. Peacock. "The police are entirely blameless. We have to do it to stay alive," she added. The bakery parking lot holds 20 cars, six of which are used by the owners and employes, she said. Often she comes back from lunch to find the lot full and not a customer in sight. Mrs. Teitelbaum's car must have been there a great deal longer than five minutes because it usually takes the Gables police at least 15 minutes to answer these complaints, Mrs. Peacock said. "She's lucky," Mrs. Peacock said of Mrs. Teitelbaum, "it used to be $35."
