3 Gableites in Salvadore Meet

Three Coral Gables tennis players rolled on to the championship in their divisions while another three were defeated in the finals at Salvadore Park last weekend. The six were among 20 Gables youths who competed in Salvadore Park's annual Thanksgiving-City of Coral Gables Junior Championships. Going against the best tennis players in the state and coming out on top were: Richard Monan, 1218 Valencia Ave., who won the boy's 16-and-under division. Richard was teamed with a Miami boy. Richard's brother, Billy, won the boy's 14-and-under division. He was teamed with a Miami youth. The third Gables champion was Ann Roberts, 2600 Columbus Blvd., who won the girl's 14-and-under doubles with a North Miami Beach girl. The trio who were defeated in the finals were Billy Monan (the doubles champ); in the singles. Barbara Cook (daughter of Salvadore's tennis pro Jack Cook) in the girl's 16-and-under division. Barbara is ranked fourth in the state. Yogi Brennan, 3115 Granada Blvd., who was defeated by Ann Roberts in the doubles. Miss Doris Hart, former United States and Wimbledon singles tennis champion, presented the trophies. Other area youths who played were: Dale Baker, 4820 Ronda St.; Tita, Penny, and Yogi Brennan, 3115 Granada Blvd.; Richard Cole, 1124 Valencia Ave.; Bill and Dean Colson, 1218 Coral Way; Bob and Barbara Cook, 416 Sarto Ave.; Sue Engleman, 1721 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Carol and Diane Gibson, 825 Ortega Ave.; Fran Goodman, 1354 Allegriano Ave.; Mike Hamilton, 650 Almeria Ave.; Marty Hershey, 16 Minoca Ave.; Phil Jesmer, 2900 Columbus Blvd. Shep Johnston, 800 Alhambra Cir.; Carol King; Lorie, Joan, Lee, and Russ Langstroth, 1454 Alegriano Ave.; Steve Menke, 1536 Baracoa Ave.; Hugh Miller, 1250 Anastasia Ave.; Jim Mills, 821 Sorolla Ave. Richard and Bill Monan, 1218 Valencia Ave.; Mauricio Montana, Valencia Ave.; Bruce Myers, 2530 Columbus Blvd.; Ann Roberts, 2600 Columbus Blvd.; Ray Turman, 3218 Alhambra Circle; Gayle Goodburn, 600 San Servando Ave. The following players were from South Miami: Jim and Bob Heacock, 3091 SW 84th Ct.; Kathy and Linda Foley, 5100 SW 85th St.; Tom Roger, 5842 SW 31st St.; Mac Claflin 4301 SW 16th St.; Joe Globish, 5745 SW 56th Terr. MOVING ACROSS the court is Ann Roberts, 2600 Columbus Blvd., seconds before she completed this forehand shot at Salvadore Park.
