EXPERT ARRANGER ADVISES Make Yule Decorations at Little Expense
By JUNE GRAY Women's Editor Beautiful and distinctive Florida Christmas decorations, that can be made for a fraction of their commercial price, were demonstrated for Banyan Garden Club members last week by Mrs. Charles McWethy, a teacher of flower arranging classes for more than 25 years. For a Pinocchio centerpiece, a live oak branch, held firmly in a cupholder, was placed on an old-fashion center mirror. Mrs. McWethy sprayed the branch with white lacquer paint instead of enamel because the pigment in white enamel paint requires a longer drying period. Five green and five white puff balls, which can be obtained at any dime store, were slipped over the oak branch. Two clusters of starfoam were arranged near the base of the branch and a couple of aralia leaves were added for variety. The red and white Pinocchio is one of the floating bottles sold at the supermarket for children to play with while taking a bath. He is set on the mirror which reflects the arrangement, completed for approximately $2. For a tropical or functional, ranch-type house, she made a door swag from palmetto and plastic fruit placed on a raphia mat. In order for the palmetto branches to hold their color and stay ruffled and open, Mrs. McWethy cuts them and puts the stems in an inch of water letting them remain there until they have taken up all the water—about two weeks. Then she lets them dry slowly in a dark place. The next step is to paint the palmetto with copper paint on both sides to prevent the leaves from drying so fast in the bright sun. The paint should be the same thickness on both sides so that the tension is the same. Mrs. McWethy leaves a little green around the edges to achieve a natural look. After the paint dries, the palmetto is wired to the raphia mat. Then, in the center, six pieces of plastic fruit with a luster finish are wired. Since the brightness from the apple, orange, pineapple, etc., is so great, Mrs. McWethy feels that a bow would be excess baggage, which would detract from the arrangement. For wiring, she prefers a fine florist wire, No. 24-26, because it does not cut her material and is easy to work with. The cost of this arrangement is about $2.50. For a TV or table centerpiece, a Madonna and child is set on a bronze bamboo base in an old aqua bowl. The bronze base compliments the Madonna's hair. To provide a frame for the Madonna's head, two colored pods of claredendron berries — turquoise and deep blue — are placed in a cup holder and surrounded by three bronze-painted agave leaves. Geranium aralias climb up the side near her head and four dracaena leaves—two straight and two curled—are added to give a sense of depth. In front of the figure is another unit of low-broken berries placed in a bronze cupholder to match the agave leaves. Mrs. McWethy, who lives at 918 Roderigo Ave., thinks colors can make or kill an arrangement. Bases should be chosen for the complementary beauty and as a protection for furniture.
