Grand Cotillion Goes Las Vegas
By JUNE GRAY Women's Editor "Black tie please" is a familiar invitation request, but black socks were the order of the night at the Las Vegas Cabaret party given by the Grand Cotillion Wednesday of last week at the Elks Club in the Gables. The Grand Cotillion, which emphasize social graces, is composed of ninth grade boys and girls who have graduated from the Coral Gables, Coco Plum and Poinciana Cotillion Clubs. Mrs. Robert Searle, hospitality chairman, checked each boy's foot as he came through the door. She sent one boy home to change his socks, but three rebels managed to slip past her watchful eye. Their white socks were easily spotted on the dance floor. One hundred and thirty-two boys and girls, did the cha cha, fox trot, rumba and samba to the music of Mary Marks and the Marksmen. Even one T-W-I-S-T number was allowed. Twist is considered a dirty word by cotillion instructors, Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Nowakowski, so they spell it out instead of saying it. Moderating the Las Vegas floor show was Ed Fishwick. Joyce Thompson, dressed in a Navy whites, sang South Pacific's "Honey Bun" to Linda Medlin. Walter Becham gave an unusual violin performance. After standing motionless through 14 measures of rest, he left the stage. Pianist Paula Munn played the theme song from Exodus, and John Whiteside Sang "On the Street Where You Live." On the spotlight twist number, exhibiting what best not to do in cotillion, the record actually became stuck, making Joyce Thompson and Terry Webster believe they were doing one of the 10-minute numbers in the Peppermint Lounge. Climaxing the floor show was an exhibition cha cha number done by Ed McDougall, Cathy Simpson and Steve Simpson, Susie Harge. Huge dice, made from cardboard and covered with crepe paper, were suspended from the ceiling. Life-size reproductions of the King, Queen and Jack of spades hang on the walls, but the balloons were held firmly to the ceiling by the air currents from the fans. Those attending were Ferebee Allen, Marjorie Bishop, Diane Bjork, Beverly Boerema, Carolyn Bonderud, Cheryl Borek, Gayle Bryant, Evelyn Carr, Margot Coleman, Carolyn Crabtree. Susan Crain, Wendy Currid, Margie Davis, Carol Jane Denicke, Kathy Dyer, Dianne Edwards, Alexa Engstrom, Desiree Erasmus, Irina Erickson, Jane Erikson, Peggy Sue Fogle, Nancy Frazier. Yolanda Glazier, Virginia Hadley, Mary Hall, Martha Hall, Susan Harp, Cynthia Holdren, Mary Hubbard, Anne (Continued on Page 19) EXHIBITING the cha cha at the Grande Cotillion's Las Vegas Cabaret Party are from the left Steve Simpson, Susan Harp, Ed McDougall and Cathy Simpson.
