First Methodist Concert For McDonald's Benefit
JOYCE McGREW LINDA HOWELL First Methodist Concert For McDonald's Benefit Two members of the Coral Gables First Methodist Older Youth Department will give a concert at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) in the church for benefit of the Scott McDonald Memorial Fund. Joyce McGrew, soprano, will be accompanied by Linda Howell at the organ. Joyce, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lem McGrew, 8440 SW 141st St., is a junior at the University of Miami and plans to teach high school choral music after being graduated. She is teaching part time at Ransom School for boys where she directs the glee club. Linda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Howell, 825 Cremona Ave., is a senior at Florida State University. She is doing her interning at Stranahan Senior High in Fort Lauderdale. Scott McDonald, in whose memory the concert is being given, died last year at the age of 21. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm B. McDonald, 3904 Durango St. An active church member, Scott served as president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship, taught a senior high church school class, and was a member of the Coral Gables High band until his health forced him to resign. While a freshman at the University of North Carolina, he was a member of the Traveling Glee Club which sang for Queen Elizabeth, when she visited this country. During 1960-61, he attended UM where he was a member of the Male Chorus, the Concert Chorus, the Singing Hurricanes and was on their singing tour of Europe when his last illness began. Receipts from the concert will be used to purchase a stained glass window to place in the church sanctuary. SCOTT McDONALD
Our Lettermen Pick Molly, Liz Top Gals
By JOYCE DENIS Correspondent The wind-up game of the football season put Gableites in a wonderful holiday Homecoming mood after downing Southwest High, 26-0. Saturday evening, Nov. 24, Lettermen announced Molly Megathlin and Liz Kononoff sweethearts. After the final voting, the Sophomore Class president is Joe Gardner. Elected vice president was Esther Lerner. Dale Brumbaugh will take minutes while John Hamilton balances the books. The boys wearing crescents selected Mary Archibald sweetheart. The sponsors of Crescent club this year are Alice Davies, Carolyn Miller and Suzanne Achee. At the recent Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference held in October, the CAVALEON rated a first place. Dec. 1 is the final day for purchasing the outstanding yearbook. Positively no books will be sold following this day. When the first dismissal bell rings at 2:15 p.m., all those heading home retreat to the parking lot. Planted among cars and people, is the Band of Distinction's money raising booth. Pickles, popcorn, pretzels and snow balls are sold every day at each dismissal time. Just one-tenth of a dollar will replenish the seemingly bottomless pit. Candy, candy everywhere and every appetite swells. Tip Toppers, the girls who recently made the visiting Amiga, Gladys Mendoza, and honorary member, are selling delicious and scrumptious chocolate bars and "turtles" (chocolate covered, caramel-coated almonds). The club, created for tall girls, installed Joan Kohlenberg, Sandy Schultz, Marilyn Rice, Pensy Marshall, Mary Trout, Carol Levine, Mary Ann Bass, Suzanne Lynch, Sandy Salyards, Bette Dell, Cynthia Cohen and Carol King as new members. New Quill and Scroll journalism honorary members are displaying printer's slugs after being tapped by the president, Jane Bennett. The slug bearers are Bill Amlong Mady Berger, Ann Chandler, Susie Gertman, John Hancock, Karen Knight, Donna Knowles, George Roselle and Lynne Rosenberg.
