Dr. Coleman Strongly Scores Sunday Selling

A challenge to the citizens of Dade County to condemn Sunday opening of business establishments and also those that sell alcoholic beverages was given by Dr. T. Rupert Coleman in his Sabbath morning message to the congregation of University Baptist Church. He urged Christians to refrain from doing business with establishments that sell alcoholic beverages and practice business on Sunday and to exert all possible influence on their neighbors and the community to do likewise. Dr. John H. Hanger, First Methodist pastor, did likewise in a short aside from his regular sermon. "Many merchants," said Dr. Coleman, "are being forced by pressures put upon them by their competitors into doing that which they do not want to do." He added if this trend continues, factories, industry and all kinds of businesses will soon be operating seven days a week. "Then," he continued, "the covetous one worshiping at the idol of the almighty dollar will have no better advantage than he would have if unnecessary businesses were closed on Sunday." He pointed out that God created man and beast to live longer and produce more effectively if they worked six days and rested one. Tests made with mining mules, farm horses and other beasts prove this theory, he said. "Furthermore, nothing could please Russia more than the disintegration of the family in America," Dr. Coleman said. Therefore, man needs one day of rest from business responsibilities in order for the entire family to be together as a unit.

FHA Parking Plan Nixed

A plan to provide off-street parking for the FHA Building by rezoning a lot and closing off a portion of Catalonia Avenue was turned down by the Coral Gables Zoning Board Monday. Tom Maxey, an official of the owning company, Catamal Realty, Inc., indicated the Zoning Board's decision would be appealed to the City Commission. It was only last week that W. P. Wilcox, FHA director for the Southeast Florida Insuring Office, confirmed that the FHA is scheduled to move out of the present location in approximately one year unless the Federal Government changes its plans. The 148 employees with a $1,011,000 payroll would be lost to the Gables if the move to the new federal building under construction in Miami is completed. Maxey said the proposal to rezone the rear portion of lots adjoining commercially zoned vacant property fronting on Ponce de Leon Boulevard just north of Catalonia and vacating of Catalonia from Ponce to Coconut Grove Drive would provide the parking necessary to induce a tenant to stay. The proposal would create a 130-car parking lot, as opposed to the 30 cars that can now be parked on the northwest corner of Ponce and Catalonia, a property leased by Catamal.
