Light That Wasn't There Is Driver's Crash Alibi

A Coral Gables man claimed he had the green light following a collision at the intersection of Ponce de Leon Blvd. and Riviera Dr. shortly before noon Friday. Only trouble was — there is no traffic light at the intersection. Joseph P. Levy, 64, of 5724 Riviera Dr., who lives just a short distance from the scene of the accident, was charged with failing to stop for a stop sign. Car Overturned Levy's rented Cadillac struck and overturned a car occupied by twins, William V. Ott and Robert Ott, both 20, of 401 Glenridge. The twins flipped over in their convertible, but were not seriously injured. Both were treated at Doctors' Hospital. Levy was also slightly injured. According to Gables Officer Bryan Thomas, Levy was southeast bound on Riviera Dr. and slammed into the side of the northeast bound Ott car. The Ott twins were saved from possible serious injury by the fact that the convertible windshield did not collapse, Thomas said. Thomas, taken aback by Levy's statement that he had the green light, theorized that he was probably confused by the traffic signal on South Dixie Hwy. across the street from the railroad tracks which parallels Ponce de Leon Blvd. Levy's rented car sustained an estimated $500 damage; the convertible approximately $800.
