New Gables Fire Truck Is Damaged
One of Coral Gables' two new fire trucks was damaged Friday morning when it failed to negotiate a corner on the way to a leaking gas alarm. Fire Chief Paul Matheson estimated the damage at approximately $200. This was the same truck which was damaged earlier when it scrapped the side of the old fire station building on Salzedo. According to Gables Officers Robert DeKorte and Bryan Thomas, Fireman Edwin P. Springer, 37, of 3030 SW 84th Ave., was south bound on LeJeune Rd. when he attempted to make a left turn at Ingraham Ter. A cluster of large concrete buttons hampered Springer in making his turn, however, and he went wide and struck a tree.
IT WAS COLLECTION DAY recently at the Pub Restaurant with Mrs. Jacques Assaele and Mrs. Sol Goldberg representing the National Children's Cardiac Home, a recipient of the Pub's wishing well. Looking on is Saul Kaplan, co-owner of the Coral Way dining spot.
Boxing Day
The British call the day after Christmas "Boxing Day," but it has nothing to do with heavy-weights. According to World Book Encyclopedia, this is the day when families give money to the milkman, postman and others. In earlier days, the cuztom was to give Christmas boxes of food and other gifts to tradesmen and servants.

If It's Non-Profit Your Group Can Meet Free At Youth Center
Meeting space at the Coral Gables Youth Center is available free to any civic, non-profit organization, the Coral Gables City Commission ruled recently. Political and other organizations have to pay, however, the Commission ruled after receiving a request for free space from a local political organization. The Youth Center gym, which will hold several hundred persons, is available to any group for $5 an hour in daytime and $10 an hour at night, according to Director Jeannette Hunt; Room 100 - which seats 100 persons - is available for $15 for the first three hours and $4 an hour over that time. Two smaller rooms, which seat approximately 30 persons each, are available for $10 for the first three hours and $3 an hour over that, Mrs. Hunt said. Availability depends on whether the facilities have been reserved for some other purpose, she pointed out. Organizations qualified for or those willing to pay free use may make arrangements directly through Mrs. Hunt at the Youth Center. Those groups in doubt about their qualification for free use should contact City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr., she said.
UM-Gables Golf Tourney
The Coral Gables-University of Miami Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, March 30-April 1, was approved for the Biltmore Golf Course by the City Commission last week. At the same time the Commission turned over to its recently created Recreation Advisory Board requests from the Miami Jaycees and the Coral Gables Jaycees for permission to hold separate tournaments. The Miami Jaycee Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, May 21, with 72 holes of golf split up among area golf courses. Gables Jaycees have planned their tourney for Saturday, April 8.
