Veteran Claims WW I Soldiers 'Neglected'
"The World War I veteran has been sadly neglected," says Henry M. Druckman, service officer of the World War I Veterans of South Miami Barracks 2043. Veterans of the Spanish-American War, World War II and the Korean War have received benefits ranging from unemployment security to education and pension plans. The World War I vet received $30 a month for his time in the service and a flat $60 and the gratitude of a forgetful nation when he was discharged, Druckman points out. Now the "Great War" vets are at an average age of 67. Of four and a half million vets, over two million are still living. The Veterans Administration reports that they are dying at the rate of 10,000 a month. More than 109,000 are past 65. Many of them are living on their Social Security alone. There is a general misconception of the vets ability to pay for the things they need. With today's skyrocketing prices, Social Security is not enough. Social Security benefits amount to $125 a month. Naturally, many vets have been able to provide for their retirement, but what about the ones that haven't?, Druckman asks. The Spanish-American War vet received a pension of $101.30 a month. The World War II vet received $20 a week for 52 weeks if he was unemployed after discharge. He also received mustering-out pay, state bonuses, educational and financial benefits and much more under the GI Bill of Rights. The Korean War vet recived much the same as a World War II vet. According to Druckman, the World War I vet of today receives few benefits. He can receive benefits only if he has an income of less than $3800 married and $2500 single. He can get immediate hospitalization only for service connected disabilities. For a non-service connected disability he must state under oath that he is unable to pay for private treatment; submit a financial statement of assets and liabilities, and wait for an available bed. For the past seven years, legislation has been introduced in Congress for a World War I pension bill. The bill has asked for $100 a month with no strings attached. Each year, this bill has been turned down. A new bill to be introduced this year, will ask for $100 a month based on the income received by the veteran. Other legislation will be introduced to halt the necessity for a paupers oath and free the veteran from income tax payments on his Social Security benefits. It is definitely past the time to do something for the World War I veteran. A letter to your Congressman would make him aware that someone is interested in the problem, Druckman pleads.

New Building, Better Staff Aid 'Y' Drive
Because of a new and permanent building, a better organized staff and more facilities, Southwest YMCA, 4300 SW 58th Ave., is sure of going over the top in a membership drive to end next Monday. "We're about three-quarters of the way through the drive," said Executive Director John Barber, "and if the trend continues, we'll surpass last year's mark of $5000 in new and renewal memberships." New Building Barber credits the "Y's" new permanent building with aiding in the drive. The new structure, dedicated several weeks ago, is a two story building that will serve as a focal point, for future "Y" activities. Membership funds assure the continuance of YMCA activities among youth, some 1235 of whom were served last year by SW "Y". To expand the YMCA program to accomodate youths of Coral Gables, South Miami and surrounding Dade areas, more funds in the way of memberships are needed. Those who support the "Y" in this area are assured that their funds will be used in this area for youth work, according to E. J. Merrifield, chairman of SW "Y's" citizen's board. Sustaining Member A sustaining member is one who directly supports YMCA programs and services. There are three types of memberships: friend of youth, at $10 and up; sustaining, at $50 and up, and Century Club, at $100 and up. Gableite Rogers Eikenberry is the drive chairman. Heading the several divisions of the drive are Frank E. Kerdyk, W. Hamilton Hayes, Rodney E. Nowakowski, Dr. Frank A. Mathes, William C. Swain, Fred S. Wilson and Donald F. Robbins.
Joe Murphy Files For Re-Election
Commissioner Joe Murphy, filed Tuesday for re-election to the seat he has held for the past two years on the Coral Gables City Commission. "At the request of many supporters and friends, I am seeking re-election to the City Commission. They feel, as I do, that the search and struggle for good government never really ends, and they believe that I can and will provide leadership in this direction to the new Commission, which will consist of at least three new members," Murphy said Wednesday. Tied Wynne Murphy tied former commissioner Winston W. Wynne in the 1959 election and gave up the four-year term to the incumbent. Wynne later ran for and won a seat on the Metro Commission and resigned after serving less than two years. "I will continue to represent all the people of our city on a day to day basis, and neither fear nor favor will ever influence my vote," Murphy said. "When a public official seeks re-election, he must stand on his record," said the attorney and resident of Coral Gables since 1929. "If his record is meritorious, he is entitled to the further support and confidence of the people he represents." The 36-year-old past president and director of the Coral Gables Bar Association listed some of the accomplishments in which he had a direct part. His Activities These included a tighter conflict of interest and high rise building law; re-instatement of Tax Assessor Thomas C. Blount; slum clearance; halting an increase in water rates; acquisition of new off-street parking facilities; preservation of zoning on LeJeune Rd. and South Dixie Hwy.; new fire station constructed; a search for a new library begun. If elected, Murphy said he will push for a showdown with Metro on the question of traffic law enforcement. "I intend to keep a big eye on land developers and speculators who would abuse our zoning integrity for their own financial gains," he said. Boot Strap Operation Murphy said also that he favors a boot-strap type operation to create a funding arrangement for capital improvements such as restoration of streets, installation of adequate street lighting, acquisition of additional recreational facilities which will avoid future bonded indebtedness. The University of Miami and University of Florida law graduate lives at 701 Alcazar with his wife and eight children.
