WEST of the City Limits with Ron Levitt

INSIDE SUBURBIA: The upcoming vote this summer on Dade County's reassessment issue can expect no sympathetic treatment from suburbia, at lease if the attitude of several civic groups in the Southwest is any indication. Several groups have promised strong stands among their membership against the new reassessment in favor of the status quo taxation. Public Works Department of Metro have placed "on schedule" to clear up the huge weeds along the Coral Way drainage canal between Galloway Road and the West Miami Junior High School. Pearl Lazarus, chairman of the Area Beautification Committee of the West Dade Citizens Association, has been working on the project. And It was quite a job just for her to find out who was responsible for the upkeep of the canal frontage. In fact, it took Metro several days to decide which department had that job! With the Palmetto Expressway now open the length of Dade County, several industries are now eyeing new sites along its route and close to its various outlets, particularly near the South Miami exit to the By-Pass on U.S. One. It looks as if even office buildings are moving to the suburbs. With the recent construction of two small buildings on Coral Way west of 67th Ave. in recent months, the idea seems to have caught on. Two more major local firms are considering small buildings in the same area. One thing Bird Road won't have a shortage of is food! With several major food chains stores already in operation on Bird Road west of 87th Ave., now comes the word that two more chains will build huge stores along the route during the next 12 months. AMONG THE NATIVES: Ed Creelan, a Century Homes resident, is the new grand knight of the Gables' Knights of Columbus . . . Looks like the Dade County Bar Assn. is Gables-minded. Frank J. Kelly, first vice president, of the Gables, automatically becomes prexy in July, 1962. Second veep is C. A. Kimbrell and third vice president is Richard M. White — also both from the Gables . . . Mary Cappo .who is leading the "African Queen" Bowling League at Bird Bowl kept the males' looking on in agony the other night as she bowled a 214 game and a 574 series . . . Lorber, the group which does so much to help asthmatic children, holds its annual membership Fiesta luncheon Tuesday at El Bolero Restaurant. Diane Cole is the new president of the group . . . Southwester Dick Hinman just completed a photo exhibition at the El Centro club downtown. Hinman a few years back won the highest honor a fotog can get — the National Award for Service to Photography . . . Sandy Freed of Westchester has been named general legal counsel for the Florida Jaycees. Architect Don Reiff has been named to design a new "Mr. Donut" outlet for the corner of Coral Way and 87th Ave. . . . Bob Granger, the executive-engineer of many big Southwest area developments such as Westbrooke, the up-coming Parkchester Homes etc., was one-time technical director on the "I Married Joan" TV series which starred Joan Davis . . . Miami Jaycees have launched their own "teach the youngsters to swim" program. Dave Albi and Pat Haynes are coordinating the program . . . There's some talk that Joe Sweeney, who was a big gun in the Democratic presidential campaign in the Southwest, may make a bid for the Dade County School Board the next-go-around. Sweeney's a former teacher turned salesman. When the movie "Wild Harvest" comes to the screens next year, you'll see a lot of familiar faces. The movie is being shot in South Dade and the extras and some featured parts were taken by local residents . . . Tony Garnet is the new president of Sigma Delta Chi, professional journalism fraternity.

EDITOR: We are happy to advise you that our recent community project, entitled "South Miami Citizen's Thrift Fair," was a huge success. Without the cooperation of your good selves and the many local businesses and the residents, this would not have been as profitable, we are sure. The continued cooperation of your good paper encourages us to promote further community projects. This, in turn encourages the citizens, the business and professional men and women to unite with the city officials for the betterment of our community. Thanks again for your co-operation, without proper publicity, such as you have afforded us, we could not hope to attain the ultimatum for which we all strived so diligently. They Want New Face On Giralda

A group of Giralda Avenue-Merrick Way businessmen appeared before the City Commission Tuesday to request four changes in that downtown area: Change angle parking on Giralda to parallel between Douglas Road and Merrick Way. Make Giralda a two-way street between Merrick Way and Douglas Road. Install new street signs on Merrick Way, Giralda Avenue and Galiano Street similar to those at Galiano and Salzedo. Change plans for creating an "island" at the junction of Galiano, Merrick Way and Giralda. The commission deferred action.
