WESTWARD HO! 'Sometime Best Way to Get Away From It All Is to Take It Along'

By JOE MORRIS Correspondent The count down began at Dr. Jack Widdershiem's home late last Friday after school let out for the summer. The months of preparation, planning and packing was finished. All that was left to do was to hitch the 19-foot all-aluminum trailer (sleeps four) to the rebuilt automobile and blast off for a month's trip to Yellowstone National Park. The Gable's optometrist's wife Nickie hung the last winter garment in the trailer closet. His daughters, Judy 16, and Linda 9, had already put the fishing rods away and connected the portable hi-fi record player. Everything had been thought out to the last detail except one. Jack poked his head in the doorway at 7825 SW 50th Ct. "Hon, did you put the shoe shine kit aboard?" Nickie laughed, "Jack, no one in this family has shined their own shoes in 10 years. Why shine them now when we are going to rough it every day?" "Well," Jack defended himself, "I was trying to cut expenses. "I'm almost afraid to count up the real expenses," he said later. "I paid $2,000 for this trailer so the family could go, then spent $300 for a hitch, $50 to get it installed and practically re-built my $300 station wagon with shock absorbers, truck tires, new brakes, heavy duty radiator fan and a dozen different things." He reflected a moment. "And to think I could fly out and back for only $285." "But we'll all have fun Daddy," Judy chimed in. "Horse back riding at the dude ranch, fishing the mountain streams, stopping at night wherever we please... by a lake or in some forest. "and maybe," she blushed, "close to the Air Force cadets when you and Dr. Archer attend the National Optometrist Convention in Denver." Dr. F. P. Archer Jr., an optometrist in Homestead, his wife Lillian and sixteen year old niece Carol Gallery-plus a toy size French poodle - will be a part of the Westward-Ho caravan with their trailer. Compensation will come to both families after a hard day's pull when they don't have to register for a room, tip in and tip out or need a maid. They'll enjoy their own hot water showers, ice cubes and a water closet convenience not usually found in camping out. The sun didn't shine last Saturday morning but the weather didn't delay their departure. As the group settled in their places for an adventure along the nation's highways, Dr. Widdershiem viewed the situation and remarked: "Sometimes the best way to get away from it all is to take all of it with you."

BAR MITZVAHS WERE held last Saturday for Robert Alan Grand (left), son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Grand, and Bruce Heiken (right), son of Dr. and Mrs. Murray Heiken. A story was carried in the last issue of The Guide.
