Ron Levitt Named Head By Citizens
Ron Levitt was elected president of the West Dade Citizens Association and immediately called for Metro to start paying attention to Dade's suburbia. "Metro needs a shot in the arm as far as the unincorporated areas are concerned," Levitt said. Levitt, 30, is president of Ron Levitt Associates, a public relations firm in Miami. He has lived in Dade County for nearly 20 years and is a graduate of the University of Miami. He and Mrs. Levitt and their two children reside at 7890 SW 17th St. Levitt said the group, which now numbers more than 200 residents, would back Metro "if it will back our needs." "Taxation won't kill Metro," he said. "It's only taxation without the services it should bring which will kill Metro." Other officers of the civic group are vice presidents Arthur Phillips, Norman Pallot, Mrs. Herbert Heiken; treasurer Lew Harder; recording secretary Mrs. Frank Parker and corresponding secretary Mrs. Wallace Lazarus.
ESSENTIAL ODDS AND ENDS are taken to patients daily by members of the South Miami Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Rose Correale examines the selections brought by Mrs. L. H. Read Jr. See other stories, page 4.

INSIDE SUBURBIA: Legal action has started by a group of homeowners against one of the suburban water-sewage plants in the area. The residents claim the sewage plant odor is a public nuisance... No matter how badly it needs repaving, officials say work on Galloway Road between the Trail and Coral Way is NOT scheduled until sometime in 1962... Progress is being made by a local civic group to get the county to clear the weed growth and underbrush along the Coral Way drainage canal... Two big new home developments (both with homes in the $20,000-class) will go all out with construction this summer. One is located at Galloway Road and North Kendall Drive in the Snapper Creek Park area; the other will be built between Coral Way and SW 16th St. in the 9000-blocks. The two developments will mean some 500 new homes for South West's suburbia. With increased traffic along the Trail as well as north and south via the Palmetto Bypass, several Trail motels are remodeling and enlarging their facilities... Construction is now underway to increase classroom facilities at Banyan Elementary School located at 85th Ave. and 30th St. in the middle of the Coral Way Village area... The recent rains have demonstrated once again the urgent need for drainage in several areas. Several residents in the area west of 87th Ave. between Coral Way and Bird Road asked that local officials come out and get a look-see during the rains "if they could wade through." ... New medical building nearing completion at 26th and Galloway will feature an exterior of Oriental decor. * * * AMONG THE NATIVES: Frank (Mort) Guilford who lives in Century Homes is the new prexy of the Coral Gables Jaycees... Fran Holzheimer, formerly top exec with an upscale New York country club, has assumed the general managership of the Westbrooke Club in Southwest Miami... CPAs Howard Miller and Howard Mesh have moved their offices from downtown Miami closer to their homes. Both are now located in the Gables... Accountant Walter Stone (of SW 47th Ave.) has written a new book on income tax. Its' called "Your Lifelong Partner, the Government." * * * THE NUMBERS GAME: Southern Bell Telephone has begun the new installations for changing all Miami area telephone numbers to seven numerals — eliminating all letters. SM Passes Budget With a Tax Cut City's Levy Nearly Cut In Half
By ED KNIGHT Correspondent It's official now. South Miamians are going to pay less ad valorem taxes during the next fiscal period, but services will increase. South Miami Council last week passed on first and second readings an ordinance adopting a $990,018.77 budget, the second biggest in the city's history. It was a unanimous vote. Residents will pay only a millage of 5 mills during the coming year instead of 9.5 mills as in the fiscal year now approaching an end. A four and a half mills cut in the city's millage rate means that homeowners will pay $4.50 less per $1,000 of assessed valuation following a homestead exemption of 5,000. MORE COMING IN Although real and personal property taxes will decrease, added income will come from utility, cigaret and franchise taxes, sanitation fees and auto inspections. A public hearing on additions or deletions to the budget was held prior to council voting. There were a few comments from the gallery, but no objections to any part of the budget. Council, however, spent about two hours questioning City Manager C. B. Petry on certain portions of the appropriation which changed little from the way the city manager presented it last month. Only amendment to the budget was the budgeting for a finance director, although the city fathers voted down by a 3 to 2 vote an amendment to budget for a city clerk. City Manager Petry, since his appointment from city clerk to city manager last year, has been serving also as city clerk, finance director, tax assessor and tax collector. Council probably will pass the budget into law at the June 20 meeting when it votes on See South Miami page 5
