Many Firsts for Palmetto This Year
By EUNICE TALL Correspondent This has been a year of many firsts - at Palmetto High School, too. A great first took place June 9 at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium when commencement was held for the 299 seniors, compiling the first Palmetto High School graduating class. Many of these seniors were just sophomores three years ago when Palmetto first opened its doors to students in the Southwest area. Leading the processional were Terrance Mentor Broadway, president of the Class of '61; Lynne Massey Leonard, vice president; Brenda Muhlinghaus, secretary; and Beverly Jean Ames, treasurer. Valedictorian Sandra Lou Pearce and salutatorians Charles Jay Gitomer and Preben Riis Miller, addressed the audience on traditional graduation topics: "We Consider the Past," Charles Jay Gitomer; "We Take Inventory of the Present," Preben Riis Miller; and "We Build for the Future," Sandra Lou Pearce. Mrs. Lyle Roberts, chairman of the Dade County Board of Public Instruction, presented the diplomas. Awards were presented by Mr. Clyde Crabtree, principal. The DAR Citizenship Award was given to Sandra Lou Pearce. Lynne Massey Leonard and John William Ritez, accepted the Elk's Leadership Award. The Dubois Award, given in memory of the late Mr. Edgar Dubois, former member of the Palmetto faculty and Class of '61 sponsor, was presented to Linda Ann Dravenstadt and Ralph Henning Knudsen. Organist was Millard Walker, choral director. Palmetto passed the evaluation given by a committee from the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges and was accredited. The two year old Palmetto Panther, school newspaper, received an All-American Honor Raging, and the first annual Palm Echo yearbook, was printed this year.
