ON TIMES

By Robert S. Hurwitz (Picture of Hoffman, Painting on Page 5) Art in its most uninhibited, imaginary, and intensive form this month invaded the walls of the Miami Museum of Modern Art. The occasion: a description – defying exhibit of paintings by Martin Hoffman. Hoffman, a self-styled soldier-of-fortune with a paint brush, disarmed Miami art viewers with 50 symbolic image paintings that cry at you for attention. A great deal of our populace, dull from artistic mediocrity, in the area, screamed foul, fraud or frivolous. Visiting architects who perpetrate a great deal of artistic misdemeanors themselves, cried lewd and laughed. What makes Hoffman great? What does he mean? What should I look for? Is he insane? Is it really good? Good questions to a very elusive problem. But hear this word and mark it well: Artists, critics and people who care acclaim him one of our brightest. In my judgment, his personal spirit and valid conception of self-determinism in the art he paints marks Hoffman as Miami's true leader in expressive form abstract paintings. Some of the work in this show falls far short of even being good . . . not every work is even worth hanging but most present an instinct, power and intensity never before seen in this area, perhaps the world. Every painting is different, yet each asks you only to accept a "visual reality." It's impossible to dissect or review one painting; you must consider the total contribution by the total effect. There's no need to feel stupid if you don't understand—because there's no intention by the artist to compel you to like or dislike. Hoffman's obsession for self-expression is all that he asks in return for his work. He is driven to paint by a spirit unknown to him. His continuity of composition is completely natural. His large paintings of mixed media are most alive and create emotions of an uncomfortable nature at first look. Then it just overpowers and dominates you. His middle-size works are least inventive and seem to fall far short of making a final statement. His small offerings reveal the artist in contemplation and occasionally a recognizable shape is beheld. Hoffman, whose works are far from puritanical, offers large areas which suggest male and female organs and shapes. This may be horrible to some but, by gosh, what he paints is sure a part of us, any way you look at it. Although I'm driven to complete insanity by some of the works, and feel unable to grasp a great deal more, I consider Martin Hoffman to be one of the most original masters of his craft in our area, perhaps the South. There's not a person in town could criticize you for not liking what you see, the show is that controversial. The important consideration is that you let your senses come alive by seeing the exhibit.
