SW Paper, Student Honored

The Student Safe Driving program at Southwest Miami High school has received state and national recognition from the National Commission on Saety Education of the National Education Association. It is one of the two schools in Florida to receive a plaque for "activities of exceptional merit." Student chairman and assistant editor of the Southwest Lancer, Katherine Valletta will receive an all-expense trip to [?] National Traffic Safety Conference August 24-26 at a place as yet undesignated by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Armand Valletta, 5851 SW 13th Street. The Southwest Lancer spearheaded the project last year and planned and executed an tensive drive this year. A wrecked car was placed on campus and the best stories about it written by students were published in the paper. A "drag race" with a small, a medium and a large car was staged to show the dangers of reckless driving. Dummies were thrown in front of the cars which were speeding against one instead of each other. Safety checks of student and faculty cars, and driving and parking around school were conducted. Editorials and features in the Lancer pinpointed the dangers of careless driving. Newspaper staff members who served on the traffic committee were Sandra Peyser, [?]an Glidewell, Mary McEnery, Pat Dallas, John Self, Regina Roberts, Joy Cherry. Mrs. Mabel M. Staats, advisor of the Lancer, sponsored the project. The Safety Division of the Metro Police Department assisted with the project as did Coach Marty Levin who is in charge of the driver education program.
