Community Spirit Built South Miami Hospital SM Hospital Women's Auxiliary Just Home Folks Helping Serve Their Hospital
By TERRY STEIN Correspondent Citizens of South Dade are well-known for their community spirit and interest in community progress. When an emergency arises, civic groups, churches and individuals respond to the need. South Miami is no exception, for in 1960 a seven-story building was built which aroused the entire community's interest and remarkable participation. South Miami needed a hospital and the community started to work. A handful of interested citizens organized it; city officials helped to develop it; public purchase of bonds financed it and, community women joined together to serve it. And serve they did! The South Miami Hospital Women's Auxiliary, which was formed before the hospital even opened in February 1960, became one of the most active and successful groups in the community, performing not only invaluable voluntary service, but making substantial monetary gifts to the hospital as well. It was begun by a small group of local women. In one year the infant group mushroomed from this handful of women to 293 members coming from all walks of life and from many areas of South Dade. Attired in their pink and white uniforms, 21 auxiliary "Pink Ladies" volunteer their services to the hospital every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., a total of 147 women each week. They man the information desk, transport patients to and from x-ray, distribute daily mail to patients and staff, care for patients' flowers, assist nurses in the recovery room and work in the bond office on the bond campaign. Some wheel the gift cart of essential odds and ends to patients' rooms; others serve as admitting hostesses by greeting new patients and taking them to their rooms, and still others operate the Green Thumb cart which sells plants and flower arrangements to patients and their friends. "This efficient and enthusiastic auxiliary has given invaluable service to the hospital," says Raymond Poore, administrator. "They have served the hospital in an efficient and dignified manner, and this year, by giving over 10,000 hours of service, have saved the hospital some $15,000 in salary expense. The auxiliary has been a welcome and invaluable part of our hospital family." Mrs. John Koval, president, explains: "Our program is actually divided into two areas — service and fund raising. (Mrs. O. B. Gains coordinates the hospital service program and Mrs. L. Henry Read Jr. is Ways and Means Chairman.) "In this way many members who are not able to volunteer services in the hospital can also participate. "Some make items for our Gift Cart, some collect plants for our Green Thumb Project, and others sell tickets and promote our fund raising events." An outstanding result of the first year was shown this past February when the auxiliary treasurer deposited $7,000 in escrow for the hospital. This was the down payment on a much-needed emergency elevator. Not only did over 90 per cent of the auxiliary members participate in this project of the year, but they drew in 35 other community groups to assist — several groups, South Miami Senior Citizen's included, have taken the hospital as their yearly project. Unlike many groups which disband or dwindle during the summer months, the South Miami Hospital Auxiliary expands its program to meet the hospital's needs. A Junior Auxiliary has been formed — a group of teenagers interested in hospital service, who work in the afternoon hours and on weekends during school and each day on regular 4 hour shifts during summer vacations. Named for their pink and white striped uniforms, the Candy-stripers are working diligently to live up to their well-known and hard-working parent organization, The South Miami Hospital Auxiliary.
