What inspirational impact a request like this might have on our artists today. Perhaps then a dedication to art may be encouraged in our modern day artists. "The Agony and the Ecstasy" is a biography of the life of Michelangelo so much worth reading that even sacrificing television viewing may be prompted. A book report is not my main concern here. However, I deeply feel that anyone who has ever asked the question about an artist — or his works — "What makes him great?" or "Why is this considered a masterpiece?"—will find the answer in the monumental dedication to the life of Michelangelo. REVIEW OF LAURENCE DONOVAN Time out from the head-scratching abstract expressionist shows is called by Laurence Donovan in his unsophisticated, simple, almost childlike works of art displayed at the Village Corner Gallery. Each work is so carefully executed in linear detail and pre-thought out design that each work gets its message across quickly. In his works depicting animals in their exaggerated habitat a likeness to the Primitivism of Henri Rousseau is apparent. Donovan has introduced a study of flat complementary color technique different and pleasing for Miami art viewers to contemplate. Many of the detailed pen and ink drawings, although crafted in his professional hands, fall short of general acceptance because of this applied art application. Donovan doesn't draw or paint beautiful women or animals, he doesn't overpower you with dynamic contrasts, he does soothe you with sincerity and his entry on the art scene is a fine change of pace and easy to appreciate addition. SUMMER ART MIAMI One of the most encouraging aspects of a fine season of art viewing is taking place now. There's no summer lull typical of Miami's norm. Galleries are giving us more works, introducing new names and are up-grading exhibits by intelligent selection. The artists and viewers have at last sensed this Miami Renaissance and are attending more shows and buying more paintings. Here's the best part. From indications so far — and behind the scenes planning (early for a change) — I predict for this area that starting in September, the biggest, finest, most interesting display of art ever seen. The junk will be less welcome, the tea club exhibits will be less attended, the art for art's sake will be more closely examined. The picture looks good.

Now You Can Arrange To Learn Flower Arrangement

Would you like to have "a quickie" to add zest to your home? "A quickie" is a simple arrangement of ferns and hibiscus, a flower found in many of our backyards in the Southwest area. You can learn how to artfully arrange hibiscus and other flowers to add color and charm to that living room table or mantle. The Ken Pines Garden Club is sponsoring a 10-week flower arrangement course each Friday, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, in the Sunniland Shopping Center Hall. Prominent persons in the world of flower arrangement will lecture. This Friday, Mrs. Paul Ochiltree of Miami Beach, an accredited flower show judge, will speak. Admission is $1 per lecture. If You Work Real Hard You, too, Can Be Arrested

You have to work at it harder to get arrested in Coral Gables these days. But don't push your luck too far. Under a ruling issued recently by City Attorney Ted Semple, Gables officers have not been making as many on the spot arrests as they used to. The reason? A recent Miami arrest case in which a plaintiff was awarded a large sum of money for false arrest. How has this affected the Gables scene? Whereas, for instance, the driver at fault in an auto accident was generally given a summons at the scene of the accident, a warrant must now be sworn by the victim. If the victim declines to press charges and the police feel strongly enough about the case, an officer must obtain a warrant. This has obviously shifted the burden of law enforcement from the police to the private citizen. Semple has advised the Police Department not to make any arrests on misdemeanors without first obtaining a warrant. The felony picture has not been changed by Semple's opinion. An officer may still arrest a felon or suspected felon on the spot without a warrant.

Kids may learn how to swim cheaper than it would cost them to spend a day at Venetian pool—10 cents. The second of a series of summer learn-to-swim classes for youngsters six years old and up is scheduled to get underway June 26 and last two weeks, according to Mrs. Donna Perry, president of the Venetian Aquatic Club, sponsors of the classes. The swim program is not restricted to Coral Gables residents, she said. Junior lifesaving courses are scheduled for those 12 years old and over July 10-21 and again Aug. 7-18. Adult swimming classes will be held July 11, 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27 from 7-8:30 p.m. Arrangements may be made at the Coral Gables Youth Center.
