School Activities at SW Underway
By JOY CHERRY Correspondent A community service program entitled "America Is Words of Freedom Deeds of Courage" will begin Sept. 17, Constitution Day, jointly sponsored by a local radio station (WVCG, Coral Gables) and Southwest Miami High School. Brief scripts about little known facts or unusual facets of patriotic holidays or birthdates will be written by students, taped at the studio and presented throughout the nationally important dates. This is the third year that such a program has been presented to the public. Recently the station and Southwest Miami High School received George Washington medals from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge for a similar project. Appearing on Constitution Day will be Bruce Glasser, Janet Biebel, Dianna Mills, Vincent Beachy, Jan Glidewell and Jane Schryer. Janet Ferguson, senior attended the leadership training course for Junior Red Cross members at Campe Green Cove, Tuxedo, N.C., last summer. While in Washington, D.C. visiting national Red Cross headquarters, she met the Chilean ambassador who invited her to a tea at the Chilean embassy along with 22 delegates who were attending a special meeting in Washington. Dade County high school physical education systems are presently undergoing a great shift in policy due to President Kennedy's physical fitness program. The high school athletic departments felt the effect of this change in the opening week of school. Southwest High School's head football coach Joe McNulty says, "In my opinion I would like to see a stronger physical education program as well as a strong varsity sports program." Acting in his official role of president of the Florida Athletic Coaches Association, he feels that a combined effort on the part of both students and coaches, will strengthen the physical well being of the students. "Bright Life," a poem by Bill Oswald, 1961 graduate, which was published in the Southwest anthology "Shifting Wings," has been republished in a new book compiled of religious and philosophical poetry written by American Youth. Bill, who has just returned from boot camp at the Great Lakes, will go to the Navy's sonar submarine school in the Keys. Southwest placed in the upper 10% and received an award in the annual Mathematics Contest for secondary schools. in the United States and Canada recently. Southwest scored 23rd out of 415 schools entered. Other areas who placed were North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and the Canal Zone, Coral Gables, Miami and Edison high schools in Dade County were others who scored in the top 10%.
