with Ed Knight CONSTRUCTION - With the recession on the wane, building is picking up in the southwest at an even more accelerated pace than before. With Dadeland Shopping Center near construction at Palmetto Expressway and North Kendall Drive, vacated homes are being sold surrounding the area, trees are coming down and the brush is being cleared. IN SOUTH MIAMI, office buildings are the principal buildings being planned. The city's bus station will be torn down this fall to make way for an office building. Another building is being planned on the southeast corner of SW 62nd Avenue and Sunset Drive and still other smaller office buildings are being planned on Red Road and in other parts of the city. ARVIDA CORP. is planning hundreds of homes immediately north and west of the Dadeland Shopping Center, the reason for the planned obliteration of Arvida Nursery, that 200-acre nursery where some of the most outstanding landscape material in the country has been raised. The numerous greenhouses and plots of the huge enterprise, a showplace in itself, runs along the Palmetto Expressway at North Kendall Drive. ANOTHER PIECE of speculation: If and when Aerojet-General Corp. decides to locate its proposed rocket engine plant in Dade County, chances are good the factory will be in South Dade. Reason: this is the only area capable of holding such a huge venture as this plant. Dade County is listed as one of a handful of sites being considered for the multi-million dollar plant to build solid-fuel propellants for the Nova moon project. AEROJET will need 80,000 acres of land. If the plant came to South Dade it would mean a 75-million-dollar payroll, $45 million in new retail sales per year, a $30 million increase in bank deposits and 9,000 new dwelling units. Also added to the area would be six new schools, 11,000 new households, 9,000 automobiles a 32,500 increase in population. Think South Dade can hold all this? ODDS AND ENDS - Look for the four-laning of Sunset Drive from South Dixie Highway to Galloway Road in 1963 or 1964 . . . South Miami Jaycees coming into its own as one of the county's outstanding Jaycees clubs has undertaken and done well on these projects this year: Christmas lights in South Miami, Christmas music in South Miami, a Christmas home lighting contest, the Miss South Miami beauty contest, a get-out-the-vote program that included taking voters to the polls and the representation of South Miami in conventions throughout the state and country. MORE ODDS and ends - Metro is going to repave these streets in the near future: SW 112th St. from 77th to 87th Avenues; SW 67th Ave. from 40th to 48th Sts.; SW 67th Ave. from Eighth to Flagler Sts.; SW 97th Ave. from 26th to 40th Sts.; SW 67th Ave. from 24th to 40th Sts.; SW 97th Ave. from 44th to 56th Sts.; SW 48th St. from 97th to 102nd Aves.; SW 87th Ave. from 8th to 24th Sts.; SW 72nd St. from US 1 to Red Road; Red Road from SW 72nd St. to US 1; SW 77th Ave. from 104th to 136th Sts. and SW 104th St. from 77th Ave. to US 1.
