Palmetto Is Faced With Rebuilding Job

By JOE C. MORRIS Correspondent Two years from now the Palmetto Panthers will be a good football team, according to Reed Quinn, head coach at Palmetto Senior High School. "We had 50 boys report for varsity practice August 23," he said, "but only two of the eight returning lettermen saw sufficient action last year to be considered seasoned players." "The task facing Reed, 31, in his third year as head coach at Palmetto, will be to bring along quickly the inexperienced and younger boys to fill the gaping holes left in the line and backfield by graduation. "We have a number of young athletes this year, in the 10th grade, who show a great deal of promise. This season's success will depend on how they develop. However, we should have an excellent team two years from now." "Last year," he said, "our 5-5 record was better than we were supposed to have. We didn't throw much and most of our offense was based on an inside running attack. We didn't have adequate speed to run outside and relied on power plays to grind out the 2, 3 and 4 yard gains. "I think with a smaller team this year - only three fellows are over 200 pounds - our speed will allow us to go outside and possibly score more often." There are no new offensive plays, he says, only variations of formations. And the only way to surprise an opponent is to run formations that you haven't run before. "We intend to run multiple offensive plays this year, rely on deception and pass more." Coach Quinn pointed out that football is becoming so complicated that an athlete who fails to concentrate on the game can't make the grade. "Concentration, on the playing field or in any competition, increases the ability to react efficiently to a situation," he said. "As a coach it is my job to put a boy in the position of reacting properly to an offense or defense situation. "An average football play lasts only three seconds. A player should know what to do before the play begins but the second that ball is snapped it's the way the player reacts that tells whether he's good or not." Quinn and his four assistants are putting their boys through the fundamentals of football these hot summer afternoons. By September 15, when the Panthers' clash with 'Cavaliers' of Coral Gables, he hopes to have them working as a team.
