Here's a Rundown on C. Columbus Gridders
By JOE C. MORRIS Correspondent The Christopher Columbus "EXPLORERS" open their football season Sept. 16, in the Coral Gables Stadium, against Seacrest High School of Delray Beach. Pete Aiello, head coach at Christopher Columbus Catholic School for boys, says he'll have a better than average team if some of the younger kids come through, — "But if they don't," he said, "we'll be in trouble." Running over in his mind the possible starting positions he said, "We have a good fullback in David Hiss. He weighs 200 pounds, stands 6' 2" and hits the line hard. "Three half-backs, Clyde Atkins, 185; Dick Braemer, 175; and John Sattler, 170; are veterans backfield men who will see plenty of play this season. "And right end fill be held down by 160 pound James Kling. "We have an outstanding tackle in Carter Burrus. I think he is as fast as any tackle in the state. He ran the 100 yard dash on our track team in 10.2 seconds. "Paul La Pointe, 180; will be the letterman at left guard. The right guard position is still up for grabs between Frank Boucek, John Pope and Dan McGivern. "Rick Sinnes, will center the ball weighing 180. "Co-captain Jack Roberts, 5' 9" and 160 pounds has been tapped for quarterback. But we're still looking at that spot. It's not definite yet. "The largest boy on the squad, Marvin Smith at 240, will alternate as defensive tackle with letterman Rogelio Cuevas, 185. "And we still have to decide between Rick Russell and Al Dumit for the left end. "I won't know what to expect from the others until after our first game," Aiello concluded. "We are short on reserves and when other teams throw 25 or 30 fresh players into a game it tells the tale real quick if you can't match them. "Twenty five years ago a player would stay in for a full game and only be taken out for an injury or to give another guy a chance to play. But no more. A team, today, has to have offense and defense players for each position, sometimes more, in order to meet the fresh opponents and last out the game. "At the moment we have enough reserves to allow it. But a few injuries could really hurt us."
